What Causes Mouth Ulcers - Treatment Of Mouth Ulcers

In life there are things I hate, mouth ulcers are high on my list, I just hate mouth ulcers. A mouth ulcer is a sore in the mouth, small little bugger usually found in either a grey or white colour, kinda cool you get them in two colours, mine are of the white variety. They usually appear on the inside of your cheek, on the tongue which is the worst little bugger of them all but also inside the lips and just below the gum line. But hey don't feel all dirty cause you have a mouth ulcer, we all get them.

What Causes Mouth Ulcers

Herpes - Ewwww doncha just hate that word herpes, sounds all dirty doesn't it but anyone can get it and the virus can leave you with some mighty stinky mouth ulcers inside your mouth as well as sores on your lips, just avoid kissing me ok unless you are a hot redhead then I will take my chances.

Stress - Yep hands up if you guessed stress would be on the list, stress is known to weaken the immune system and that's just when the mouth ulcer will strike. Naturally stress is not responsible for all mouth ulcers but it does put you more at risk if you are stressed out.

Hormones - Oh god do I have to mention women's periods but yeah you women may notice you get a mouth ulcer just before your period. This is because progesterone levels rise and that reduces your immunity making you more prone to getting an ulcer.

Injury In Your Mouth - This can be anything from an old broken ragged tooth or biting ot burning your mouth. I have got loads by eating something really hot that really burns the pallette of my mouth. So any old broken teeth go see your dentist ok.

Illness - Mouth ulcers can also come from a sympton of another illness such as bowel disease, coeliac disease or lups. Indeed the little bugger can infect you from all directions.

How Long Do They Last, Why Do Some People Get Them More Than Others

The good news if you call having a stinking mouth ulcer good news is they usually only last 3-10 days and if they persist for longer than that go see your dentist. If you are stressed and run down chances are the mouth ulcer will last longer, kinda daft really because the damn ulcer actually runs you down. If the mouth ulcer lasts for about a month see your Doctor, it's rare but it could be mouth cancer, better being safe than sorry.

I guess we have all had at least one mouth ulcer in our life but some people seem to get them all the time. I usually avoid kissing them as they are painful buggers, ok so I lied, I would kiss anything, anything female ok !!  Women under the age of 40 get them the most but fear not girls because 20 percent of the UK get recurrent mouth ulcers.

How To Treat And Prevent Mouth Ulcers

A really good gel or mouthwash is a good treatment as are lozenges that will ease the pain and help them heal quicker. Some people use tea tree oil in water for a good mouth wash and that is supposed to help as it's both antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

As like most things in life a good healthy diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables helps as does drinking one to two litres of fluids and I don't mean red wine or vodka. It helps keep your immune system healthy and you don't get run down and as you know once you get run down those little mouth ulcer buggers come a calling. Also visit your Dentist once every 6 months so you can rule out any jagged or rough teeth. So basically keep that immune system healthy and the teeth smooth and Bobs your Uncle. Hey just curious, hands up if you have an Uncle Bob, oh please get your hands down, I was joking ok.

I was surprised to discover just how many strains of Herpes there are causing everything from Chicken Pox to Cole Sores. No one is immune or above it.

Do you have any Information on Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma? My uncle was just diagnosed and is already going down hill. The Cancer sites are a little vague and unhelpful.

Scott I think a lot of people see Herpes as a sex related thing wheras it's not and as you say it is the cause of loads of things. I hope to cover so much more in an understandable way of writing that most people can follow.

Myownworld I thank you my little friend, I am in November writing 1 Hub a day so be prepared for even more. I am now off to see the x factor result, how sad am I lol x

Hi HT, great work. You're right, those little monsters do hurt. You can temporarily soothe the pain by placing a wet teabag directly on the ulcer - it has something to do with the Tannin in the tea, I think. Anyway it works. Great hub. Good luck with your one a day thing.

I really hate mouth ulcers. Used to get them like once every quarter when I was still in school (don't know if from stress, from my monthly you-know-what, or was simply careless enough to bite the inside of my mouth). Now it's more like once every year :). But they're really bothersome and they really hurt whenever I accidentally bump them. Thanks for the advice on how to get rid of them / avoid them. Will remember this the next time I have this (not-so) little bugger.

glad you are feeling better too. I get a lot of headaches too, most of mine are usually sinus related, but not always. I get them stinkin little mouth sores every great once in a while, how i hate them. putting a little salt on the sour helps them to heal up but it sure does sting. lol :)

I used to get terrible mouth ulcers in my early 20s. Thankfully that passed and I just get them occasionally now. Good info, presented in a totally readable way.

My hands are up because there's no way stress would do that! I guess that's why most people suffer from mouth ulcer since everyone is so stressed these days. Thanks for it Health Tip.

My dad used to dab on tincture of iodine on them and they would close up go away. I tried to find some once but couldn't. I think taking vitamin C helps a lot of this stuff. Great information! - Carol

Rmcrayne - I don't get them as often myself, usually when I burn my mouth.

Dohn - Cheers mate, lucky Phillies winning 8-6 !

Shamel you just stay cool and you will be fine ; )

Carol I am a big Vitamin C fan and I agree it helps.

JJ I swear even if your lips were covered in cold sores I would be in there ; )

I will take that as a compliment... although that scenario sounds painful (covered in cold sores?) ouch!

The funny thing is I have had the occasional mouth ulcer (inside) to which like I said I thought was from too much orange juice, but I have NEVER had a cold sore on my lips in my entire life! Lucky me I guess! =)

Lol it was deff a compliment, I only get cold sores when I am on holiday in Spain, the sun on my lips brings them out so that is why now I always use lipbalm ; )

Wow, how do you know all this stuff? your like a walking medical book and i love reading your hubs, they are so so useful, esp this 1 as unfort, i do suffer mouth ulcers............ouch you little buggers!!!!!

I generally find mine are stress related, i get stressed, get a mouth ulcer, get run down then more stressed coz me ulcer is hurting, a vicious circle that, lol. Plus note, i find teething gel gr8 as a quick pain fix (when u get over the initial agonising pain of putting it on) but will def try the tea tree oil and water next time, heard tea tree is gr8 4 most things, so wish me luck :-)

Thanks for all your gr8 gr8 advise, and keep it coming
