What causes ringing in the ears is generally a medical condition. Thus, is is recommended to set a consultation with your doctor immediately. He or she can run some tests in order to determine where the unwanted sound is coming from. Through this, your options regarding the treatments that you are going to use are narrowed down.

Of the reasons why a person experiences tinnitus, the most common cause is cochlear damage due to noise. How common is it? Around 90% of the people who have ear ringing has noise-induced cochlear damage as a cause.

What usually happens is that when our ears are exposed to loud noises suddenly or repeatedly, the tiny hairs in the cochlea get bent or broken. These tiny hairs are responsible for sending electrical impulses to the auditory nerve when sound waves are detected, which the brain interprets as sound. But, the damage of these tiny hairs make them transmit random electrical impulses to the brain even though no actual sound waves are detected. In effect, we hear a ringing noise even though it has no external source.

Another common cause of ringing ears is stress. As we know, the hypothalamus is a primitive part of the brain that plays an essential role in the production of chemicals in order for our body to function normally. But, when our hypothalamus is exposed to long periods of stress, anxiety, or shock, it fails to produce the essential chemicals. In effect, unhealthy conditions take place, which include tinnitus. Furthermore, stress can also be the outcome of the presence of the unwanted sound.

Then there is sinusitis or allergies. Each of these conditions is actually not directly what causes ringing in the ears. On the other hand, it is the kind of medications that the sufferers of these conditions use just like antibiotics and antihistamines. These medications thicken the mucous in the middle ear, leading to a buildup of pressure. As a result, middle ears infections as well as ringing in the ears take place.

The fourth main tinnitus cause is Meniere's Disease. It is usually caused by the imbalance of fluid pressure in the inner ear. Attacks of Meniere's Disease are usually marked by vertigo, hearing fluctuation, and tinnitus.

If you are able to determine which of these conditions have caused the ringing in your ears, getting the treatment that would work for you becomes easy. It is because the unwanted sound is a symptom of certain conditions, hence, it is generally treated according to its cause.
