The Golden Experience

While I was at the primary school, I remember telling my parents that I would go to the University although I never knew much about the university. I was just excited about it.

Passing through the four walls of the university otherwise known as the Ivory Tower is a right as well as a privelege. The University is a world of its own with new things emerging per day.

I was very glad when I gained an offer of admission by merit into the Real Estate Department of Enugu State University of Technology. My school was located in a different State many kilometres away from my State.

My first day at the University was like someone who migrated into another planet. Every thing was strange and new. The buildings bigger, the means of communicating to the students different, large number of people from different backgrounds, all walking up and down to make registrations and to settle down.

To some of us,it was the first time of leaving our States, parents and old friends to start a new life of struggle and dedication to education.

To others who were the shy type, it was a bit difficult to make new friends. For some weeks we were home sick and felt lonely.

The University experience gives you opportunity to make new friends with same focus and related mission in life.It is the best place to mingle with so many people of different backgrounds willing to know you.

It is the building block for the achievement of your life ambitions. You learn how to stand in front of a large crowd to make presentations, raise arguments, get into debates and test your intelligence quotient.

I must confess that I was a shy fellow who couldn't stand before people especially girls even when I know what to say and how to comport myself.

This problem was taken away from me through the university tutorials and presentations which I took part in. It created the opportunity to head class group assignments and stand out from the crowd.

The University could be a place for people to drift away. Every individual that joins the University is seen as an adult and is responsible for his/her actions.

The University as a world of its own has time of partying and jollying. Most people could be carried away by the "croozing". I remember a guy in my Department who spent 12 years struggling to secure his Degree Certificate and ended up with a 3rd Class.

I discovered that most students do not set their priority well before or even when they are at school. Others do not know why they are there and where they want to go. The University Authority doesn't teach you self control and discipline.

The University Authority would not persuade you to attend lectures, read your books, prepare for your exams and take your exams. That option is yours. It indirectly teaches you how to be independent and arrange your world in a productive manner.

The university provides you the opportunity for the students to have a first hand on leadership and politics. There are Departmental, Faculty and School political programmes and associations which are run by the students. There are associations for people from different states and languages.

Most students who took part in such exercises have delved into the political environment in the "real world" at various levels. The essence is to teach eloquence in expressing your opinion and being firm about it. You learn the power of dialogue and persuasion and the consequences of violence.

These student associations and class inter relationships develop in the students the spirit of unism through the Aluta Continua principle. There is oneness when it comes to the pursuit of their course irrespective of the difference in opinion.

You could initiate long term relationships while in the university. My very good friends today have been people I met during my University days. Many of them are in different continents, yet we communicate often. The bond developed during the School days is still strong. We share ideas, careers plans and receive advice from one another.

I have seen school mates coming together to float business ventures, get married and help one another in securing good jobs.

I want to conclude that Life in the university is a golden experience everyone should feel.
