What If I Don't WANT To Have A "Blessed" Day? - Don't Get Me Started!

This morning a cashier at a local store concluded the transaction with the phrase, "Have a blessed day." Now I know some of you think that I'm going to go off about the Jesusness of the whole thing but I'm not. What I'm going to go off about is that I don't understand the whole phrase and after an exhaustive search of the Internet (today's modern bible) I found that a lot of people don't know what it means but it apparently pisses off quite a few people. The closest I could get to any sort of real explanation was from a Christian website that supports the phrase with some psalm which states, "This is the day that the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it." Not a bad idea, I guess. (Though after reading some of these sites I did begin to wonder if the people who wrote the bible were a little lispy with all the "hath" instead of "has" for everything.) Undeniably this is a Christian phrase and while the sentiment is nice I wonder if the people who say it even consider that a blessed day may not be what I want to have at all? What if I don't WANT to have a "blessed" day? - Don't Get Me Started!

I don't know that you could call me very religious but I get the concept and it makes sense to me. What never made sense to me are the people who feel the need to get everyone on board with their religion. Whether passing out pamphlets, knocking on my door in black pants, white shirt, tie and bike helmet I find the whole "spreading of the word" about as respectful as the "spreading of the legs" with someone you don't know well enough. Don't get me wrong, I respect other people's beliefs but wish they would respect mine too. I don't need to know how Jesus died for my sins (mainly because I don't think I've done enough sinning to qualify him dying over it...maybe he could have gotten a headache or even migraine over my sins but ach, I don't believe Jesus died for my sins). And the thing about all the people with the "fish" on their cars (and checks) is that not only do they seem to see it as a "get out of life free" card but they also seem more intent about telling others how they live their life than living their life in a "fishy" sort of way. I mean come on, have you ever been cut off or not let into a lane by a car that has a fish on it? I have and let me just say, I'm thinking Jesus is a little like Santa and knows exactly who has been naughty and who has been nice.

I usually end my interactions with people with, "Have a swell day" or something of the like. (Perhaps the only reason for saying this is that I think more people need to use the word "swell".) I don't want to have a "nice" day because I happen to be an overachiever and my expectations are that my day should be more than just "nice." I don't want to have a "great" day because frankly that's too much pressure. I don't know if I can have a great day every day and trying for it makes me tired. But whatever day I may have I know that I'm responsible for whether it's a good day or bad day by the way I choose to react to it. So I'm not really looking for any divine intervention when it comes to my day. (I'd rather save asking for divine intervention for the bigger stuff like maybe winning the lottery or waking up to find I've lost twenty pounds and it's all gone into my biceps)

I guess at the end of all of it is that I'm a pretty organized and neat person. I think it's just that I don't like it when other people put their stuff on my stuff. This includes physical as well as emotional stuff. I'm not saying you can't have a "blessed" day I'm just asking that you not tell me what to do. You're not the boss of me and your pal Jesus is not the boss of me. Frankly the only real boss of me are my cats who demand to be fed, watered and pet without any room for discussion or debate. Much like Smokey Bear taught us, "Only you can prevent a forest fire" - "Only you can choose what kind of day you're going to have" and before you go around telling other people what kind of day to have, as yourself, "What if I don't WANT to have a "blessed" day?" - Don't Get Me Started!

In my experience it's said by old ladies and religious people. It sounds so weird to me that my usual reaction is amusement, but if I had to hear it too often I would probably get annoyed. :)

Interesting perspectives. Thanks for sharing. I never looked at it that way.

I am neither an old lady or particularly religious but use the word "blessings" all the time. In my case, I am not telling anyone what to do, I am wishing someone well. Most people seem to understand this as their eyes light up and their smiles broaden.

If you are ill and a friend says to you, "get well soon," do you take the same offense??

"Namaste' = The Divine in me blesses and honors the Divine in you" is my intent behind using the word "blessing" or "blessings upon your day."

Scott, I read and admire your Hubs because of your plain speech and your efforts to shed light on some of the intolerance in the world today. Is it fair to expect the large-issue intolerances to go away if we ourselves have trouble with the small ones?

Everyday we are in touch with people from all over the world with different languages, different cultures and the same words can have vastly different meanings. Might it be more compassionate to consider the "intent?"

Thanks again for a thought provoking Hub. Namaste' Blessings, Earth Angel

Earth Angel, Of course you're right...you're way more evolved them someone like me. I appreciate the "blessings" you send but can't help but feel there seems to be ultierior motives in the case of some people. We should consider the intent but we also have to laugh at things and I just found this funny so I chose to write about it. Don't take your blessings away have pity on the less evolved! :)

In my neck of the woods, it's a couple of ethnic groups that say, "Have a blessed day" the most. It's kind of nice to be around other cultures and hear what they say and think is pleasant. They also are tired of saying "Have a nice day."

I've heard wished blessings from other's besides Christians as well. Probably I would tell the cashier that I don't like the comment if it offended me. I like your idea of "Have a swell day.

What I DON'T like is cashiers calling me "Honey." It makes me want to wear black leather and mean-looking makeup.

In Scotland I have never heard anyone say have a blessed day, it would probably cause a riot here if it was said because of the biggotry problems we have here between protestants and catholics a more common pleasantry after a chance meeting or a visit to someones home would be to say "F*** OFF, AND LEAVE ME IN PEACE" love the article Scott, thanks for sharing.....jimmy

At least you have the important thing correct: your cats are the boss of you. I think I'll join the "swell" revolution.

Well as a christian who is born in the blood I have had days when.... the spirit was very strong on me to bless someone. It's actually not us being showy about our faith- we are being lead- at least that is wha is it for me. My guess is if you are not having a good day- and some christian says that to you it's really christ saying, cheer up. Even being a christian- sometime i don't

want to. I don't want to obey Him. i say things like, father, this guy looks really

.... like his cats are in charge of his life and if I intrude with a loving greeting he might start a whole religious following about how he has been persecuted by me.

He doesnt' know that if he had the blood- he might feel like it or thoughts like this wouldn't wear him out because of the strength he would recieve from the blessed blood. He would know that man was never meant to live on bread alone. He doesn't know that saying is really pointing to how weak are spirits become without the fathers love and with out it our own worldly measures at some point in life ard not strong enough to sustain us and .. well I'm preaching but no more that ..

I just want him to leave me to my self serving self centered day. i don't want to think about others . I don't want to say- have a blessed day and risk your rejection, discuss or whatever.....but see what will happen is the next in line is a little old lady who is someone very loney and to tell her to have a blessed day- makes her whole day. So... it was worth it.

The other side.

can I say that is funny hub! I am not anti-christian or Jesus or anything and especially God cause I believe like you wouldn't belive, but, I agree with you. Sometimes and most of the time, think about this, the Bible says that you should go to your rooms and pray in secret and stufff and not to be idolaters, which to me says, keep it to yourself. So why this doesn't apply to christianity is beyond me, so...Have a swell day. I like that "swell". cheers

I saw the title and thought I'd write my comment before I even read it. Why? Because I alreay agree with you. My sister says this, writes this as often as she can... with only one slip.... she doesn't say Blessed... but Blessest!! ? who knows maybe a back east thing.

honestly, I would rather here "have a blessed day" with a smile than "don't forget your receipt, the ladies at the door will need to see it".

I think your all right, and nobody is wrong. To each his own. And we are all entitled to our own choices and beliefs.... of where we are at in our life and walk with GOD. As long as he is front and center. We can't fool GOD. He always knows our heart, soul and what our intent is. He knows everything, and what is best for us. We Keep Learning everyday. I could see all my blessings.... good or bad. The bad help me to appreciate the good. And keeps me close to God. I'm trying to have faith BIGGER than a mustard seed.=:):)'s!! Which isn't easy in this day and age. I hope you all have a Blessed, Blessest, Swell, nice and Awesome day. I wish you well always. We wouldn't ever say, have a bad day. GOD says, "be Disciples for him, and Love each other, and Love him the most. We are all Gods children. Peace and Love to us all. In JESUS name.... Amen!!!

If I freely offered you $10 from my great wealth without any strings would you take it? Yes you would. I offer blessings every day to every person I touch, speak to or pass on the road. I do it because of the huge and continuing blessings I have been given by the Lord Jesus Christ. I do it because I can. You can reject it or get angry, that is not my problem. So Be Blessed!
