Okay now you are really serious about becoming a full timer, the next important thing is you must have a legal address in order to licence your rig and have insurance and then how do you receive your mail while on the road. Hopefully these tips will help you out.

You cannot use a PO Box for a legal address when it comes to licencing your rig so therefore you need to find yourself a legal address. Most towns/cities have mail services that can be used. In your yellow pages look under "Mail Service" When you found one, call and ask some questions, or better yet, stop in to check the place out. If stopping by, look for how organize they appear to be and how clean it looks.

Questions you will want to ask:

  • How long have they been in business?
  • What are the rates for the mail service? Some places charge different rates, depending on what kind of mail you normally receive. For example, you have several subscriptions to magazines, this might cost you more money. Or maybe you just love getting all those "Junk" mail and want it forwarded to you. All of this could cost a little more money.
  • What are thier contract/terms? See if you can have a copy to take to look over at your own leisure.
  • Do they accept packages from other services beside the post office? Example Fed-Ex, UPS.
  • Will they accept certified register mail?
  • How often is your mail sent to you?

the next thing you want to do is a research to make sure they are a very reputable company. We met one couple that they found a mail service and within one year they had their identity stolen. Up investigations they had learned that the mail service was throwing some of their mail in a dumpster without shredding their info. Needless to say, the mail service got shut down, and the people had to scramble back to their "Home Base" to find another mail provider. Not to mention they had to make many other changes because of the identity theft. So make sure they have been in business for a while and have a good name and reputation.

There are mail services that are just for full-time RV'ers. Escapee Club are very reputable and very trust-worthy. You do need to become a member of the club to get the mail service. Escapee Club is located out of Livingston TX.

Some folks choose to use one of thier children's address and have them send thier mail on. We have met folks on the road that have at least one child on thier banking account and will have them take care of any bills that they might have.

Many full-timer's choose to licence and insure out of South Dakota because of no state sales tax.

There is a lot to check into when deciding to become a full-timer. Brian and I have had private mail services out of IL, IA, and NM. We only had minor problems with the one out of IL. The bussiness what reputable, but it seems as though we didn't get all of our mail when we asked for it. Our best one is Mail Forwarding By Waldon; they are located out of deming NM. It's privately owned and the owners use to be full-timers themselves,. If we seem to have something that may appear very important or maybe just a lot of mail; they will email us. Whenever we ask for our mail, they mail it out promptly.

Recieving your mail really isn't all that difficult either. If you are staying at a private park, chances are you can have your mail sent there. Most state & federal parks will not allow you to get your mail at the park. There fore you will need to have it sent "General Delivery" to the nearest post office near you. It's a good idea to choose a small town that has only one post office. It's also wise to either call or stop in the post office and ask if you could recieve your mail by general delivery there. Make sure you pick up your mail as soon as possible. post office will only hold general delivery mail for a short time before sending it back.

All mail service that will send you mail has to at least ship the mail proirity mail. Some folks will pay to have it shipped via overnight. Depending on how much mail you recieve will depend on how often you want to send for it. Some mail service requires that your mail be delivered to you on a weekly or monthly basis.

Excellent article!

We debated for two years over how to handle our mail and legal domicile. Lucky for us we had a relative who was handling mail, but this year, we finally took the plunge and joined Escapees to become Texans.

Yeee haw!

Wow this is really good information. I have had a relative handling my mail while I bounce around the world, but this would have saved him a ton of stress. Great hub
