What Is the Prostate Gland

It is surprising when you learn just how many men have very little, or in some cases, no knowledge at all on their Prostate Gland. So what is the Prostate? Where is it? And what does it do?

It is actually made up of many glands operating as one unit, and its main purpose in life is to produce part of the seminal fluid. This fluid along with the sperm then becomes the ejaculate. Science is now telling us that the prostate has possibly more functions than just the production of seminal fluid, but modern research has yet to identify these other functions.

The gland is donut-shaped and about the size of a walnut in the adult male. You will find it just below the bladder, and the urethra passes through the hole in the middle of the prostate to carry urine to the penis. The physical relationship of the urethra to the prostate is probably the most significant reason why so many men suffer so much grief in their later years, typically fifty and over.

Testosterone levels begin to drop with age, and this is believed to start the enlargement process. As the prostate expands, it slowly strangles the urine-carrying urethra which runs through the middle and causes all manner of problems which will be discussed in future articles. Frequent trips to the bathroom during the night will be the first indicator of an enlarged prostate. This inability to completely empty the bladder can also cause infection just to compound the situation.

BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is the medical term for a non-cancerous enlarged prostate; and as I have said previously, nearly all men will be affected to some degree. A few simple life style changes accompanied by certain supplements will reduce the swelling. But why wait. Prevention has to be better than cure, and I will be discussing the many ways this can be achieved as this series of articles progresses.

As you become familiar with my writing, you will realise that I am passionate about prostate massage as a treatment as well as a preventative measure. So at every opportunity, I bang on about the benefits of massage to the prostate because it is a muscle as well as a gland. So why not pop over and have a look at this non-invasive method.
