Wicca beliefs

What Is Wicca?

What is Wicca? Wicca is one of the fastest growing religions today. A diverse religion, they have several different branches. Considered a neopagan religion, Wiccans respect nature and see it as a manifestation of the divine. Their religious celebrations and rituals reflect this belief. A complex religion, it is not easy to understand and often people have misconceptions. Accordingly, the purpose of this hub is not to promote Wicca but to dispel some of the common misconceptions.

By the uneducated, Wicca is often associated with Satanic worship and black magic. However, this is a fallacy. The confusion stems from erroneous beliefs from the Middle Ages and the use of the pentagram. Satanists place the pentagram two points upward, whereas Wiccans place it two points downward.

In Wicca, followers can be either atheistic, monotheistic, duotheistic, or polytheistic. In this hub, I will focus on the duotheistic form of Wicca. Although Wiccans do not believe in the biblical God, they do believe in a higher spiritual power. This spiritual power consists of a God and a Goddess, more commonly called the Lord and the Lady. Even though they have different functions in life, they are complementary, equal, and interdependent.

The Goddess is the mother of all life. Considered a triad goddess, she is often referred to as the Moon Goddess and Triple Goddess. The Triple Goddess is symbolically associated with the cycle of a woman's life and the phases of the moon. She represents three different aspects: the maiden, the mother, and the crone. The maiden represents spring, innocence, and new beginnings. The mother represents fertility, birth, and nurturing. The crone represents wisdom, guidance, and the gateway to death and reincarnation. The three different aspects are connected to the phases of the moon: a waxing moon, a full moon, and a waning moon respectively.

On the other hand, the God is often referred to as the Horned God and is symbolically associated with sun. The Horned God represents strength, virility, sexuality, and hunting. Since the goddess is considered the mother of all, the God is both her lover and child simultaneously. Therefore, the God is considered the inspiration of the Goddess.

Unlike other religions, Wicca has no universal book of guidance like the bible. They have two main beliefs: the Wiccan Rede and the Threefold Law. "Rede is derived from an Old English word "roedan" which means to guide or direct." It states, An it harm none, do what ye will. In other words, this means in whatever you do, it should not hurt anyone else. When the rede is violated, the Threefold Law is the consequence. The Threefold Law states any harm or good you do to somebody else comes back to you threefold. Some Wiccans also follow the Ardane. These are 161 laws for witches covering topics on conduct, covens, persecutions, and curses among other things.

Wiccan originates from the word wic which means to shape or bend. An important part of religion is the use of magic. Since Wiccans believe magic is a gift from the divine and the divine lives within us, they also believe they are co-creators with the divine. Through aligning their soul with the divine and channeling the surrounding energy, they believe they can transform themselves and reality to reflect their visions. In addition to magic, in Wicca they also practice divination and healing. These rituals along with dreams, experiences, and incantations among other things are all kept in a book of shadows.

Like other religions, Wicca has its own celebrations. These celebrations can be performed solitary or in a coven. The celebrations usually surround Sabbats and Esbats. Sabbat originates from the old French word, s'ebbatre, and it means to rejoice, frolic, and revel. Based on the cycle of the seasons and the length of daily light, there are eight Sabbats. They are divided into Greater Sabbats and Lesser Sabbats. Unlike Sabbats, Esbats are based on the phases of the moon and celebrated on each full moon.

Lesser Sabbats, also called quarter-days, divide the year into four equal parts. These Lesser Sabbats are the Winter Solstice, the Summer Solstic, the Vernal Equinox, and the Autumnal Equinox. The Winter Solstice is the longest night of the year followed by the shortest day of the year. Conversely, the Summer Solstice is the shortest night of the year followed by the longest day of the year. On the other hand, with Vernal Equinox and the Autumnal Equinox, the hours of daylight and darkness are exactly equal.

In addition to the Lesser Sabbats, there are four cross-quarter days or Greater Sabbats. The Greater Sabbats are midpoint between the Lesser Sabbats. These Greater Sabbats are Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. Because they represent seasonal turning points, they are considered more important. Samhain is considered the most important one of all because it represents the turning of the year.

Although the Wiccans do not have churches, they communicate with the divine, perform their rituals, and celebrate important days through casting a circle. The circle serves several persons. First, it creates a sacred place. And secondly, it provides protection from outside negative energy and distractions. When casting a circle, it can either be done as a solitary act or as a coven.

Upon death, in Wicca, they believe we go to a place called Summerland. Here, no one is excluded. Both good and evil are included. In some ways, Summerland is like the Christians concept of heaven. A paradise-like place, the time there includes spending time with the divine, reuniting with our loved ones, recuperating, reflecting upon our past life's lessons, and planning our next life's lessons. When a person is ready, they proceed to their next incarnation.

In conclusion, Wicca followers are neither Christians nor Satanists. Their rituals and celebrations are closely connected with the change of seasons and the phases of the moon. Through communication with the divine, magic, healing, and divination; they try to transform their lives to their visions. To be a Wiccan is to celebrate life in its totality. Achieving enlightenment through reincarnation is the ultimate goal.

Hi Jen :0)

Great Hub...Your information is pretty much spot on...I have friends who are wiccan`s and they believe it is white witch craft and that they are their own Gods etc Of course they dont believe in Satan.. there is a town here that is there local headquaters and you can feel the opression as you walk through it.... One of satan`s great deceptions is getting people to believe that he does not exist...

Great Hub....Love in Jesus your brother Mike :0)

Satan was the most beautiful Angel in Heaven. He is also said to do miracles and other things that Jesus did too---so no one can tell who is whom really. The Church used the Old Ways to incorporate into the Christianity religions and then backbiting those people's and telling them that they are the evil ones. That's kind of calling the kettle black don't you think. I know God or whomever resides above us would never do such a thing to his people and all of us are supposed to be HIS people.

Hi Lady G :0)

Yes originally there were no demons until Satan was thrown out of heaven down to earth and this is his kingdom. Christianity was not even around then. Christians as we know them came about just 2000 yrs ago. demons have been around since the beginning of time. Demons are fallen Angels that are under the command of Satan.

I can not personaly prove to you that God, Jesus and Demons exist..It has to be by personal revaltion and I have experianced both. I did not discover God from the Bible or Christaians for that mater. Everything i know and have seen has been by witness account. to be honest Christians as I knew them turned me off religion and church and meeting God in a Very personal way gave me real hope and real life and also made the bible come alive. there has been so much damge done by religion and all God wanted was a realtionship..pretty simple really and man gave him religion..how sad and look at the hurt and pain it has caused.

there are a lot of demons alive and well in the christain church as well as all the other belif`s...why do you think we have so much friction in the world.

Great to meet you Lady G!!! later mike :0)

That isn't the answer. Daemons were originally associated with the soul of a child and could shapeshift at random until the child grew older. They were their souls and when the daemon was killed so was the child. They were considered good to be around and good creatures..but that was before christianity desided to play politics. The only evil and demons in this world are those we make believe---

Lady G :0) that sounds like folklore?....Is this information by personal revalation or from a book or group?

You see I do not trust man and his beliefs and all I Know comes first hand from God ,Jesus and the Holy spirit...no books or people otherwise i would just be invloved in a religion

Hi Mike

Thank you for the comment. I have a friend who is Wiccan too. Orginally, he was raised Roman Catholic. Although Wicca is not for me, I don't understand why some people despise him and are so prejudice. He and I worked together. There was another coworker where we worked that just hated him. He thought because of the Wicca, our place of employment was "dripping with demons." He would get red in the face and it would seem like he was going to explode if the Wicca was even mentioned. This kind of attitude was what was difficult for me to understand.

The way I looked at it, don't get mad about it. LIke the above UTube Video said, "Don't force your beliefs on them. If they choose not to listen to you or accept what you say, the best thing you can do is lead by example. Let them see what God has done in their own life. You set a good example by doing that, Mike.

I know I"ve said it before, but I am truly appreciative that we have met through Hub Pages. You set an example for me believe it or not.

Have a great night, Mike!

As always, Jen

Mike--mine might sound like a folk lore but your evil and emons descriotion sounds very much like the story of Pandora's Box in Greek Mythology.

Jen you have never read about those things? Halloween and Christmas are but a few of them that were taken from Pagan ceremonies and traditions.

Read the Councils of Trent and Nicea and there is one more but I can't remember it right now. Go beyond the Bible and find out for yourself what and why some books were not allowed in the full text of the Bible.

Wicca is very much the old ways. Alchemy that is persecuted in the Bible is only the same things they do in present days--pharmecuetical companies do it all the time. Herbology is another one that is done these days too and is shunned in the Bible. Anyone care to guess where the Medical symbol comes from and means? It's wicca and pagan and the old ways incorporated into the new.

Did I offend you somehow? If so, I am sorry. Yes, I did read about the ways pagan or old beliefs were incorporated into christianity, especially with Halloween. I will be reading about the other holidays in the future. My intention with the hub was to dispel some of the myths about wicca like people believing wiccans are satan worshippers. Totally not true! As I said to Mike, where I used to work, we had an employee that use to go bullistic if anything about wicca was even mentioned, yet he called himself a Christian. With his attitude, he was anything but a christian.

Have a good day, Lady G. Thank you for your input.

Me again Lady G

Yes, I do realize they took books out of the bible. I have a book somewhere, I can't remember what it was called, but it even doubted whether Jesus was real or not - the reason being, he either was not mentioned or barely mentioned by historians during that time. Their assumption was if something as important as the crucifixion (sp?) took place, it would have been recorded historically during that time moreso. I had to stop reading the book because it bothered me. I didn't want to doubt whether Jesus existed. Because without Jesus, who did I have to count on or guide me through this life. I know alot of people believe in reincarnation, but I would hate to think I had to keep living lifetimes over and over again until I achieved enlightment. The way I look at, this life has been hard enough for me that I don't want to go through another one. Maybe that is ignorant thinking, but that is the way I feel. I don't advocate anyone else has to feel that way.

Seamist,

I am confused. Whee was it I said that I was offended? I was sticiking up for Wicca and it's beliefs. Was not that your intent to the Hub?

There are alot of books taken or left out of the Bbile--they call them hersy's but if you really read them you will know why they weren't in the Bible at all. Tehre is a site that has them all on it and it is Reluctant Messenger. they have a yahoo group there too if you are interested.

Re-incarnation is not a repeat of the same life over and over again (unless your committed suicide in one) --much different then that. It's about learning all the What If's and working on oneself to be Christ-Like. It is also our playground of sorts.

Off topic--I noticed that you have several comment sections, you might want to edit your hub and take the extra ones out.

Hi Carina

Hi Carina

First off, I am not Wiccan so if I err when answering your question, you'll understand. While Wiccans usually believe in a God and Goddess as being supreme beings, most of them do not believe in the biblical God, Jehovah. I don't know whether that answers your question, but I hopeit helps. Thank you for stopping by and commenting.
