What Is Your Physical Condition? Part One
59HAVE YOU HAD a physical check-up lately? Have you taken time out within the last year from work or from play, to consult a competent diagnostician and have he gives you a thorough examination?
If not, do it now, because even a casual check-up may reveal certain conditions about your state of health that need attention or correction. This is true especially if you are past forty and have allowed yourself to drift along "as is" for the last few years.
You may be doing the wrong things and perhaps are shortening your span of life without knowing it. You may have the beginnings of a metabolic, arthritic, tumorous or a vascular system ailment that can be arrested or corrected before it gains headway and brings serious complications.
Let the doctor give you a complete and thorough examination, including X-rays, cardiograms and feces analysis. Then with the findings before him he will be ready to tell you exactly what is right or wrong for you. And, if you wish to reach a ripe healthy old age, free of complications, take your doctor advice.
He will give you fundamental rules for diet, sleep, work, play and other activities. Those rules will be based upon your age, your medical history and your physical condition. Be sure to follow them and health will be yours to have and to enjoy.
Nothing is more important to your well-being than good health, and this is how Lawrence Sterne summed it up: "O blessed health! Thou art above all gold and treasure. This thou who enlarges the soul, opens all its powers to receive instructions and to relish its virtues. He that has thee has little more to wish for, and he that is as wretched as to want thee, wants everything with thee . . ."
A great deal has been said and taught about will power. But you may find it more effective to use a little "want" power. When you feel inclined to overeat or imbibe or do something else you know you are not supposed to do, say to yourself "I want do it!" and live up to it.
The greatest enemy to good health and well-being is self indulgence in little things. If fried or highly seasoned foods are not good for you, indulging your appetite for them even on a small scale will be just as harmful for you. If smoking is bad for you, refuse to indulge even in one or two smokes. And, if playing handball is hard on your heart, confining it to one or two games a week will be just as harmful and may do you irreparable damage. Learn to use your "want" power and refuse to gratify a small wish just because you are self-indulgent.
You cannot cheat on yourself and expect to be the winner. You cannot continue to abuse yourself, even in a small way, and not pay for it afterwards. The important part to remember is that a physical illness or breakdown affects everything else about you. Your thoughts, your feelings and emotions and even your outlook on life is influenced and colored by your physical condition.
A person who does not feel well, who is beset by pain or incapacitated by sickness cannot be calm, composed and normal in his actions and reactions. He cannot be sociable, amiable or considerate as usual. He cannot weigh facts properly or evaluate anything in his customary manner. In fact, if there is too much pain or discomfort he cannot see or think straight.
This definitely affects his general behavior and his relationships with others.
