If you want to know what is a diuretic, a diuretic is a medical substance that helps to get rid of excessive water from the body through urine. There are some types of diuretics that can be found over the counter and there are others that are natural (like hers). Though they serve the same purpose, there are many different types of diuretics.

Loop diuretics work by blocking the re-absorption of sodium, potassium and water in kidneys. The loop diuretics are strong medicine and they act very fast. They are therefore, used in emergency cases. The loop diuretics help to treat acute congestive heart failure and arterial hyper tension.

Thiazide diuretics perform mostly the same function as loop diuretics. They help to get rid of excess water form the body by preventing potassium, sodium and water from being absorbed back into the body system. These are the most commonly prescribed types of diuretics. Thiazide diuretics are also used to treat hypertension.

Potassium sparing diuretics allow potassium to be reabsorbed but block re-absorption of water and sodium. Potassium sparing types of diuretics are a common treatment of cirrhotic edema and congestive heart failure.

There are also natural diuretics such as cranberries, caffeine and apple cider vinegar.

Remember, that you should consult a doctor before taking any diuretic.

OTC Diuretics

Have you ever thought about using diuretic drugs? Or buying them over the counter? Most, but not all doctors encourage OTC diuretics but the truth is that various types of diuretics are combined into one pill and sold over the counter. And patients depend on such pills to aid in removing excess fluids from their body, kidney stones, PMS and to cure acne. Diuretic pills are also used when treating sciatica, lymphatic swelling, liver disorders, and gonorrhea.

You would hardly find a physician who will risk his career to give you wrong information about which pills you should take, that’s why it would be a smart thing to ask a doctor to examine your condition.

Potassium sparing, loop and thiazide diuretics are just a few most common types of diuretic pills which are used to treat patients who suffer from excessive accumulation of fluids in body tissues, high body pressure and so on.

Pills should be used in moderation but, anyway, be sure to consult a doctor, especially if you know next to nothing about OTC diuretic pills.
