What Is a Carabiner?

A carabiner is a metal or plastic loop with a gate that is spring loaded or screwed. They are widely used in sports that require rope work like sailing, climbing and caving. They are also used as key holders and water bottle holders.

Carabiners are also used in certain industries such as construction and window cleaning. For recreational use, most carabiners are made from lightweight aluminum. For industry, carabiners are usually made from steel.

Non-locking carabiners have a sprung swinging gate that is easily opened to insert a rope or other hardware. The gate snaps shut and is held closed by the spring.

There are different types of carabiner gates: straight, the most common and least expensive; bent gates, which are easier to use; and wire gates, which are lighter weight without sacrificing strength. Wire gates are also safer for climbers because they are less prone to open as the result of a fall.

Locking carabiners are the same shape as non-locking carabiners, but they have a sleeve around the gate. The gate can only be opened if the sleeve is released. This makes it more secure.

An auto-locking gate allows for quick locking and prevents the user from accidentally forgetting to lock the gate. Twist or screw lock gates have sleeves that twist up or down and must be operated manually.

For industry and recreation, carabiners hold an important place. These little devices enable climbers and window cleaners to have fun or do their work safely.

How Carabiners Make Outdoor Equipment Easier to Use!

If you know what a carabiner is, you already know how useful one can be for outdoor sports and industry. Even if you don’t know what one is, you’ve probably seen one and maybe even used one.

People use carabiners to hold water bottles, and to gather loose things and fasten them to other things.

For climbers, sailors, canyoners and cavers, carabiners are a necessary piece of equipment for using with ropes. They are easy and convenient because they require only one hand to operate.

If you’re climbing, you can only have on hand free at a time! Any outdoor sport that requires using only one hand at a time to secure a rope or equipment requires the use of carabiners.

For window washers and those who work in construction, carabiners are essential for using with scaffolding and safety devices in regards to outdoor equipment. For people who are neither climbers or window washers, carabiners come in handy both indoors and outoors for a number of uses that are limited only by imagination.
