What Kind of Measures Can Homeowners Take to Conserve Water?
72Ways to conserve Water
Here are some ideas that we use in our home.
Use less water when flushing ~ by placing a half gallon milk jug filled with water into the tank you can save water and still have enough for flushing (caution ~ if you have a newer tank that's made for using less water this won't work)
Don't let the water run when doing everyday things like brushing your teeth or doing dishes. You can wash all silverware, plates whatever and then rinse them all at once.
Only do full loads of laundry, you can save a bit on your energy bill too if you use cold water. Companies are now making detergents that work with cold water to give you the best clean. And you never have to worry about things shrinking.
Only do full loads if using a dishwasher. You can save a bit on your energy cost here too by rinsing with cold water. I've found that washing in cold gets the stuff just as clean as washing with hot. Don't have enough pots and pans to wait, do those nightly by hand, only takes a few minutes.
Shorten up Shower times. We use a simple timer in the bathroom to remind us how long we've been in there. (Works great with teens by the way who tend to forget)
Outside consider getting soaker hoses to water gardens and flower beds. They use less water and give the plants a good soaking. Remember also to water in the early mornings when it's still a bit cool. The plants can use the water during the day when it's hot.

Good article! Also, you should replace your shower head with a low-flow model. If you have an old toilet, replace it with a low-flow toilet.
