Interview By AlyiceEdrich.net

Today I had the honor of interviewing children's author, Donna Shepherd. I met Donna online a few years back and fell in love with her honest, yet powerful style of writing devotions. I loved her style so much, that I asked her to write a monthly column for The Dabbling Mum. She's bright and has a lot to offer, so listen up...

In your opinion, what makes a great children's book?

In my opinion, a great book is one that parents can read over and over again without pulling their hair out. I like a bit of humor thrown in, too. Words that sing along with illustrations that enhance the story combine to make a memorable book, and a wonderful experience to share with children.

When I was a little girl, my favorite books rhymed. I'm a singer and musician, so I suppose my love for rhythm influenced my tastes even before I'd sung a note. My mom tells the story of how I used to come alive when I heard music, and would literally dance my diaper off!

Sometimes, I've read books that were supposed to be told by a child, only to feel like an adult was telling the story. How can a children's author find his/her child's voice?

Oh, sometimes I think I'm not more than eight years old on the inside! One of my poems published by Guideposts for Kids was about the loss of a front tooth. It told how we look different. We sound different. We even spit when we speak! As an adult, I wouldn't write about that, but children relate.

Another poem I wrote - in keeping with the teeth topic - was about the importance of brushing your teeth. I talked about how our teeth will rot out if we don't take care of them. I showed it to my son, and he said, "It needs to be more gross." So - I made it even more descriptive. I received a lot of feedback from Moms who have that one taped to the bathroom mirror.

I also have what I call my 'Review Crew' at church. This group of children and teens read my poems and books before I submit them. I've received tremendous feedback and suggestions.

How can a children's author productively market his/her books?

Since my book was released by a press just getting into the picture book market, we have worked together to learn how to effectively market my book.

I look for every opportunity, no matter how small. I'm doing book readings, interviews, and book signings. I've written articles, started a blog, and do reviews for other children's authors occasionally. I'm also using the marketing tools made available by Amazon. My publisher is faithful to send out publicity as well. The one good thing about being with a small press is that they are totally committed to helping you sell your book, and there is no danger of having the book pulled from the catalogue.

And I love to meet new people and network. I'm a member of SCBWI and several Yahoo discussion groups. Many marvelous friends have been great about giving me a boost now and again-including you! Thank you!
