What Might Have Been
70Don't Let Fear Get in The Way
Jenny stood on a cliff gazing into the horizon at the sailboats going in and out. She looked further out at the fishing boats heading towards the deeper waters. She looked even further out, as far as she could see to where the ocean met the sky. She saw a lone cruise ship going to ports beyond the horizon. Jenny sighed deeply as she looked. She was lonely and had always wanted to go to some exotic island. Ever since she was a little girl she had a reoccurring dream of meeting her one true love on a beach in Hawaii.
Today she had talked to a travel agent who had offered her a deal of a lifetime. It was two glorious weeks in Maui right on the beach. The catch was that she had to go five days from today. She had the vacation time, the money, even a bikini she had never worn just in case she ever went to an exotic island. Her boss would give her the time off she knew all she had to do was ask. She hadn’t taken a vacation in ten years and he was becoming more and more insistent that Jenny take some time off from work.
Jenny thought of all of the reasons she couldn’t take the vacation. She had never taken a vacation just by herself before. She had always gone with a girlfriend or her family. Though she had her swimsuit she didn’t have anything else to wear. There was simply not enough time to shop. She always was afraid to shop for herself, as clothes that looked nice just didn’t fit. The clothes that fit were just so hard to find. What if she had a bad asthma attack over there? How could she trust the hospitals? No she thought it was better to just take the time off, watch old movies and read romance novels set in Hawaii.
Seven hundred miles away Ted also stood on a cliff gazing into the horizon. He didn't see the rolling wheat fields he was facing. He saw a south sea ocean. He saw sailboats going in and out around an island on that ocean. Further out he saw fishing boats heading towards the deep waters. He looked even further out, as far as he could see to where the ocean met the sky. He saw a lone cruise ship going to ports beyond the horizon. He had visited his travel agent that day after work. His travel agent had offered him a deal of a lifetime. It was two glorious weeks in Maui right on the beach. He was so excited. Ever since he was a little boy Ted had a reoccurring dream of meeting his one true love on a beach in Hawaii. The catch was that he had to go five days from today. He had the vacation time, the money, even had one of the surfer swimsuits that he had seen cool guys wear in the movies set in Hawaii. He was his boss’s right hand man. His boss gave him the time off as soon as he asked him. The only thing his boss said was “it’s about time you took some time off. Enjoy your two weeks off. You deserve it. Oh and find some nice girl that you can show us when you get back!”
The Dream
She Never Came
Ted went to Hawaii. Hawaii was an amazing place to visit. It was so beautiful better than he had ever imagined it would be. Sadly though he spent most of his time on the beach looking for his dream girl. He never found her she never came.
