Comedy and Booze, That's How I Recommend Getting Through this Depression

I love television, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.  Yes, I read.  Yes, I write.  And hell yes, I love to sit on my couch at night and laugh my ass of courtesy of high quality sitcoms.  Dramas are the more popular television shows these days (Dexter, 24, Heroes, Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, CSI, Fringe, Bones, and on and on and on).  I enjoy a good drama, but lately I've needed some laughs.  The economy sucks, and that's a fact.  There's nothing I can do about my lack of job situation right now, but instead of sulking and crying in bed about it, I've been choosing going out and enjoying my days and searching for work.  At night, I like to sit back with a beer and watch something that will make me laugh.  These are my top recmmendations if you need a giggle.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

This is currently my favorite show on television. Unfortunately, the fourth season ended already (season usually runs in the fall), but the shows can be seen on Hulu and you can buy them on DVD. The show is about four friends who own the bar Paddy's Pub in Philadelphia, a very shitty bar in Philadelphia. These characters are terrible people; they would sell their souls for fifty dollars, and they'll make you laugh while they're doing it. Take for example the characters Sweet Dee and Dennis. In one episode, Dennis and Dee pick up a drug habit in order to qualify for welfare. Sounds terrible right? Wrong, it's hilarious. Here is some funny Sunny promotional clips. Watch them and become obsessed. This show has a small cult following right now. Join us and laugh your ass of! It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is on FX.

The Office

So many people get up in arms about The Office, professing their undying love for the British version and how it was so much better than the American version. I'll admit, the British version is piss your pants hilarious, but come on, the American version is pretty hilarious as well! I feel awkward while watching The Office. If I feel awkward, little distanced me sitting in front of my TV screen, then clearly the actors, writers, directors, etc. are doing something right. Mission accomplished! The fights between Jim and Dwight are my favorite. Question: which bear is best? I suggest watching some of The Office to find out. And get hooked, get hooked quickly!  The Office in on on Thursday at 9:00 PM on NBC.

30 Rock

I have a female crush, mega size, on Tina Fey. This woman can do it all: write, act, sing, and dance. Okay, I might've made up that sing and dance part, but I bet you that she could do it if she had to. At the 2008 Emmy's, 30 Rock won for Best TV Show - Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy - Alec Baldwin, and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical - Tina Fey. The writers of this show have their characters saying everything you wish you would say in your daily life. Liz Lemmon (lovely Tina Fey) says everything that goes through her head, including my favorite ridiculous phrases "Blerg" and "Nerds!" A sitcom about a sitcom, based on 30 Rockefellar Square called 30 Rock. How did nobody think this up sooner? And also, praise the Lord for the glorious comic return of Alec Baldwin!  30 Rock is on on Thursday at 9:30 on NBC.

Scrubs

Currently in its eigth (and possibly last) season, Scrubs has provided me with smiles for years. Guy love was made popular on Scrubs with Turk and JD (Your welcome future I Love You, Man fans). I'm not sure how true to life this medical sitcom is because the doctors look too good too often amidst the hospital drama, but I'd sure love to be stuck in this hospital when I'm sick! Will we ever know the Janitor's real name? Scrubs is on on Wednesday at 8:00 PM on ABC.

Seinfeld

Okay, okay, so Seinfeld is in syndication, but Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David created the ultimate sitcom when they brought Seinfeld to television sets.  Jerry Seinfeld's comedy is so wonderful because he creates jokes about the everyday scenario.  He busts on taxi drivers, NY parking, and his best friends.  Seinfeld is described as a TV show about nothing, but never before have I seen nothing so funny.  Check your local TV listings to see when Seinfeld is on TV in your area.

You picked some good ones. I've never seen 30 Rock or Sunny in Philadelphia, but the clips were great. Maybe I can catch an episode on tv.

I agree that laughter is good for the soul and especially now with this dour economy. We all need to laugh more. I also like Seinfeld. Watched some old I Love Lucy re-runs a couple of weeks ago and thought that I would fall out of the chair with laughter. Some of those golden oldies are hilarious!
