Burnout is quite possibly one of the worst things you could go through. Burnout can occur in any situation, particularly with emotional attachments and highly stressful situations. When you become burned out, you feel tired and drained. You become emotionally overwhelmed and feel as though you can’t control yourself or anything else around you.

If you have found yourself in this position, giving of yourself until there’s no more left to give, it’s time for you to focus on yourself again. Try following some of these tips to help you find your way again.

Give yourself a break
Give yourself a break

1. Stop.

First, you have to stop everything you are doing. You will probably feel like you can’t stop, but you can, and you must. It is extremely important that you drop everything. Don’t try to carry even one tiny responsibility. Leave it all behind. Give it to someone else to take care of for a while because you need the rest.

2. Re-focus.

Usually when you reach the point of burnout it is highly due to you giving so much of yourself without receiving in return. It is important for you to rest and then start to re-focus on yourself again. Ask yourself questions like:

· What do I enjoy doing?

· What music do I like to listen to?

· Where do I feel most comfortable and at peace?

· Whom can I trust to talk to about anything?

3. Set new goals.

With burnout often comes the realization that you have set your own goals aside to work on others’ goals. This leads to a sense of unbalance and frustration because you know there are more things you are capable of doing and desire to achieve. Take some time to think about what you’d like to accomplish for yourself, then set some new goals.

4. Take some time off.

Sometimes the process of rest and re-focusing can take up to a few weeks. That’s okay. Don’t worry about setting time limits on your recovery. If you cut it too short, you will only end up back at square one again.

5. Go on vacation.

If all else fails and you can’t seem to make yourself stop, or if others are intruding on your privacy when you need it the most, take a hike. Pack a bag and get away for a few days. Sometimes you just need a long weekend alone to think and clear your mind. A nice, quiet vacation at a bed and breakfast in the country could be exactly what you need right now.

Well written blog and good advice, thank you. I can see burnout around the corner but sadly no real vacation until December.....the lot of a school teacher.

@Georgiakevin: You might not be able to take a vacation, but you could definitely work with #1, #2, & #3. ;)

@Jenn: Thanks! It's always nice to hear that something I write means something to someone else. :)
