What To Do With Your Time When You Retire
54For some people retirement looms over them like a threat. They are worried that they will not know what to do with their time. For other people they cannot wait to retire. For those who think they will be bored when they retire the truth is that once it happens you will probably wonder where you had the time to work.
There are many things you can do when you retire from taking up a new hobby to doing voluntary work. From writing to travel.
A new hobby.
If there is a hobby you have always wanted to have a go at but did not have the time, you can do it now. You could go to night school to get you started. If it is a craft it could also make you some money. If there is a craft or gift shop near you have a talk to them and see if they buy locally made articles and if they might be interested in something you can do. If you are already good at something like knitting or woodturning you can advertise for commissions.
Voluntary Work
Besides charity shops, who are always looking for helpers, there are all sorts of other voluntary jobs to do. There is work to do with children who are being bullied; the homeless; the elderly and the disabled and several animal charities. If you cannot, physically, work with any of these groups you could help raise funds . If you look on the internet you are bound to find something of interest to you, from big national charities to local causes.
Writing.
If you enjoy writing or though that you would like to write you can have articles published on the internet or freelance for your local paper. If you have never written before or are not sure about it, think of a hobby you do or something that interests you. Then start by taking notes about it. Then these notes can be expanded and before you know it you have an article of 500 or 600 words. Its that easy. You can find more information about writing on the internet.
Travel
Now you have more time to travel, if you have the money the sky is your limit. If you have not got a lot of money there are travel schemes about for the pensioners. For example, in the UK pensioners and the disabled get free bus travel and concessionary train travel. If you still cannot travel as much as you would like because of costs you could try house or pet sitting. There are sites on the internet on which home owners advertise free accommodation in exchange for house and/or pet sitting. These jobs are all over the world so you would only have to pay your fair and food costs. Some of the jobs even include a food allowance. This is something that may partner and I have done and as we like to travel it has helped with our costs. You get the opportunity to see places you would not necessarily thought of visiting.
Pets
When you were at work you may not have been able to have a pet because of the hours you worked. Now you can have the pet you want. Pets can be loyal companions. They can give you the give you the responsibility that you miss now you don’t work and they can give you plenty of exercise. If you still do not want to be tied to a pet of your own but still want to be involved with animals, try the voluntary work section.
As you can see being retired need not be the frightening or boring time you thought it might be. There are plenty of things to do to keep you busy and you can enrich the life of others while you are doing so. You will soon wonder when you had time to work.
