What To Expect When You Quit Smoking
79Do you smoke? Are you thinking of giving up the cigarettes? Do you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking? Well you've come to the right place. I was addicted to cigarettes since I was 12 years of age. It's not an easy thing to give up cigarettes, I know, I've done it hundreds of times. And I know what to expect when you quit smoking. Smoking is such a nasty habit of we all fool ourselves that we are enjoying it. This is especially so when we have been smoking for a number of years and we are beginning to feel the effects of sucking all that hot smoke into our lungs, coughing and spluttering our way through every enjoyable cigarette.
So if you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking I will be able to tell you because after all of 40 years of smoking I have finally quit.
What to expect when you quit smoking
I took my first cigarette when I was only 12 years old. It was from an older boy, maybe two or three years older than I was, you can imagine what I would like to do to that older boy if I could get my hands on a time machine. Suffice to say it took me a long time to actually get hooked on cigarettes. That's the real kicker, you don't get hooked with the first cigarette, you really have to try and get hooked on cigarettes. When I think about what to expect when you give up cigarettes, I know now that one of the more insane things is that almost 4 years later I will get cravings for cigarettes. And these cravings always happen at most unusual times. Before I gave up the cigarettes I would always enjoy a cigarette after a meal, with a drink, while on the telephone, in a traffic jam, the list of times when I would enjoy smoking is endless. Now that I have quit smoking cigarettes I get urges to smoke at times when I wouldn't have even thought to have a cigarette before.
What to expect when you quit smoking
For the first few days of giving up you will probably go through some pretty rough times. This is the worst time for giving up. The quit smoking effects will make you want to scream sometimes. The worst thing you can do is panic. You want to remain very calm and collected. Don't let the urges for cigarettes get to you. If you want to know what to expect when you quit smoking, you can basically expect to have constant urges. These constant urges will only last for a minute or two, try to keep your mind off smoking and the urges will pass and you can carry on with your life. You must look at your quit smoking plan and realize that quitting smoking is all about getting through these individual urges of two or three minutes, getting on with your life, getting through the next urge, continuing on with your life, rinsing and repeating this. The urges will begin to come less often. You will continue to get urges throughout your life. I have spoken to people who have quit smoking for 20 years and still get urges every so often. That is a long-term what to expect when you quit smoking.
