When I'm trying to locate a dentist in my area that I can trust, I always want to know what makes a good dentist and what doesn't. There are some things that people should be aware of when they are trying to find a good dentist.

One of the first things I watch out for when I trying to find a dentist in my area is flashy advertising. When a dentist uses big, extravagant advertising techniques, it sometimes signifies that they are more concerned with quantity over quality. If they have more patients to serve, then they are going to be more rushed and will not do a very thorough job on you. There are many ways to find a good dentist, but relying on the dentist's advertisements is generally not one of them. Some of the ads you might want to watch out for more than others are those that overemphasize twilight sleep, cosmetic dentistry, and one visit comprehensive treatments. Dentist's who try and promote these services over others is probably not interested in long-term service.

The kinds of sedations that dentist choose to use could also signify something to look out for. It is usually a good idea to try and find a dentist that does not use intravenous sedation. This is because this kind of sedation puts the patients at risks that are usually not necessary. The dentist in my area does not use this technique, and I don't think that I would let him. It's always important to remember that just because the dentist says it is ok, it doesn't mean that it is. There are so many different ways of doing things in dentistry that most of the techniques used are just for the preference of the dentist and not always for the well being of the patient. You have a right to get the best treatment and should not have to settle for what is most convenient for the dentist.

In addition to what has been discussed, here is a list of what you should watch out for. Even though there are always exceptions, you should probably not go to a dentist that does any of the following:

  • Sells dietary supplements or vitamins in their office.
  • Quick to recommend replacement of amalgam fillings
  • Quick to suggest complete removal of teeth needing root canals
  • Says they specialize in treating headaches, backaches, myofacial pains or TMJ problems
  • Asserts without proof that fluoridation is dangerous

There are many other warnings that should be considered when trying to locate a good dentist. I am fortunate to know and trust the dentist in my area. If you know a dental professional that you can trust, you can talk to them more about some other things you should watch out for when selecting a good dental practitioner. If you are not able to find a dental professional you can trust, you can contact the American Dental Association and they can give you some more information to help you select a good dentist.
