People with social anxiety struggle to get a normal life with their peers at work, with their family and in social activities, this condition can get worse if its not treat it correctly. Its common for people with social phobia to experience cronic depression due to the frustration and loneliness that some experience.

There are some types of treatments that are recommended by experts that help reduce this disorder, control it or overcome it. The results vary on every person, depending on how severe it is and how much effort they are willing to put on the treatment.

The common types of Treatments are:

Medications and Therapy

Medications can be:

  • antidepressants
  • anti anxiety medicines
  • beta blockers

Therapy is with:

  • social worker
  • psychologist
  • psychiatrist

Antidepressants

Some of the antidepressants that doctors prescribe are paxil, zoloft and many more. What you need to be aware is that most drug medications cause some type of side effects and it varies in each person. Some people experience nausea, headaches, changes in sexual behavior and other symptoms.

However, even with the side effects medications help treat and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, but you have to follow a prescription with your doctor and have periodic visits so he can monitor your progress and make sure that you dont show major secondary effects.

Therapy

Psychotherapy is the best way to treat social anxiety, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has shown positive results in most people that follow it. The main objective is to change your irrational beliefs and thoughts that creates fear in a social activity.

What you need to understand is that while medications can help you reduce your severe symptoms to go on with your normal life, they will not cure your social phobia, you need to follow a therapy so you can control your fears and beliefs, this way you will have a long term positive change.

Also what treat social anxiety successfully for some people might not work for others so there is not a one cure for all. Some people go with their physician to get a prescribed medication, if it does not work or they have negative effects, they ask for a different medication prescription, that is the way many people do it. You should really consider behavioral therapy for long term and safety results.
