What Would Johnny Cash Say About Adam Lambert?
77
Anyone who knows me, knows I'm not a big television watcher.
In fact, I disconnected my satellite service almost a year ago.
I find that most of the things I'd like to see can be found online.
I've never watched an entire episode of "American Idol". Ever. I watched a piece of one show one time prior to this past month.
In the last month I have only watched specific performances found on "American Idol's" official website at the urging of my teenage daughter. She wanted to 'introduce' me to the sounds of Adam Lambert.
My Introduction to Adam Lambert
It's hard to remember which Adam Lambert performance she showed me first, because before the night was over I had watched them all multiple times.
I was extremely impressed with his unmistakeable style, his stage presense and his incredible singing talent.
I thought to myself, this guy is going far, he has what it takes to make it big. I was an instant fan.
As many of you who've read my hub about my daddy's music will know, I was raised on good old fashioned country music. My tastes today are quite diverse. I can just as easily sing something by Hank Williams Sr. as I can something by Pink or Fergie.
Prior to my daughter showing me Adam Lambert's version of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire", I had already heard about it on a local country music radio station. From what I remembered them saying, they weren't impressed. I was glad to finally see it for myself to make my own assessment.
The first thing I noticed was how much slower he started out. I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. But as he continued I started picking up the seductiveness of his sound. Then as the music changed you could pick up the sultry MIddle Eastern flair he added to it. I was hooked. It was simliar to how a snake charmer lures the snake in. It is incredibly sexy. Listen for yourself.

The Newest American Idol
Adam Lambert became the runner up in this season's finale of American Idol, losing to Kris Allen.
I do like Kris Allen, but he isn't the same caliber as Adam Lambert in my opinion. Kris Allen has a cute boyish look about him that reminds of what Bobcat Goldthwait must have looked like as a younger man. Look at his mouth and how his lips form words. You'll see what I mean. I say this with all due respect to both men. I love Bobcat Goldthwaite and I love Kris Allen. I just notice things like that.
What Would Johnny Cash Think?
Knowing what I know about Johnny Cash, I think he would have loved Adam Lambert's version of "Ring of Fire". I think he'd be even more impressed with Adam's attitude.
In 1971, while Johnny Cash was peforming Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down" live on his own television show Johnny Cash and Friends, he refused to change the lyrics the show's executive producers wanted him to. They had wanted him to change the reference to getting stoned to keep from offending a family audience.
Johnny did things his way and was respected for it. I think Adam Lambert is cut from the same cloth.
In fact, I think Adam Lambert is the new Man in Black.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, Ron! I was really disappointed that Adam didn't win. I think he really has great potential. He will still do well without the win, but he really deserved it. I read today that Queen is supposedly planning to ask him to be their frontman. But he's also already working on a album of his own. I think we're going to see big things out of him pretty quick.
I have never been able to watch American Idol. Carrie Underwood is from a town very close to here, and when she was competing, it was a huge deal for everyone to go to these watch parties and participate in banks of phone calls. She's very good, and I have a couple of her CDs. I really like most of what she does, but I wasn't one of the AI supporters, and still am not. I listened to the video while I was reading, which means I wasn't watching it. His voice is good. I'm not big on the eyeliner, though. Based on hearing the one song, I'd say you're right about his potential.
I've seen lots of pictures of Adam with and without the eyeliner. You'd like his version of "Feeling Good". When things calm down and you get a chance, go to the American Idol website and click on the performances and check out some of Adam's other stuff. You'll be amazed.
Things are going to calm down?!? I'll believe THAT when I see it! And her dad didn't even want to take her in. He thought she was being a "drama queen". For that he gets some of the duties! LOL!
I'll check it out.
I'm not positive about the 'calming down' part now that I think about it. LOL Don't tell me that dad pulled the old "just quit yo' cryin' and suck it up" routine?! Poor girl!
Yep. Called her a 'princess'. She threw it back in his face when we got home, though. It's going to take awhile to live that one down. Did you read how she did it? That was the funniest part!
Just running down the road chasing her sister, right? She's going to be sore tomorrow.
Actually, she was just walking. I'm telling you, we should have been a family of ballerinas we're so coordinated.
She's got some good pain meds. She went right to sleep when we got home.
That does take talent! Poor thang!
KCC, I also became an Adam Lambert fan and was disappointed that he didn't win, but was actually expecting him not to win. For me he was so professional and so polished and American Idol is supposed to be for amateurs. It was a bit like Steve Tyler taking part in a small town talent show. In comparison, Kris Allen was an amateur and came across as an amateur and I think that's why America voted for him.
You may be absolutely right, Cindy. Adam was very polished and comfortable on stage. He is a natural. I am ok with Kris getting it. Really just being on the show at all opens so many doors for all of these performers. I expect both of them to do well.
I've felt from the start that Adam was in a league apart from the rest. I think he did Johnny Cash proud with that - but he could easily fit into Freddie Mercury's or Richie Blackmore's shoes, wouldn't you say? What a voice, what a range - and oh what an attitude! And yet, there's a little boy look when he isn't singing which is so cute! Best new voice I've heard in a long time! Probably better for him from a professional point of view that he didn't win and have to be with AI for a year!
Oh, see. Here all along I thought the guy in this hub was the winner. I think it's time for me to go to bed.
I do agree with you, Shalini! He has an incredible range. He fits in well with so many sounds and genres. He has a killer smile and I thought he always looked quite humble when spoken to, but killed it like a pro when behind a microphone singing. You're probably right about being able to do what he wants with AI controlling things.
Sorry, LM.....Adam was runner up. But, such an incredible talent.
I am a huge Adam Lambert fan. He is the reincarnation of Elvis. WHo knew Elvis would come back as a gay man with Robert Plant like range?Props to Kris Allen for hanging in because he was clearly a huge underdog throughout the show. Danny Gokey,Lil Rounds,Alison,Adam and Matt Griaud were all expected to finish ahead of him. I didn't even have him in the top 5 from the beginning of the whow but every week he did enough to stay on board.I'm wondering if the whole eyeliner thing and his sexuality took him out of favor with America? He is a natural fit with Queen and it would probbaly actually benefit QUeen more than it would would him, but what a nice kickstart to a career to do already established rock hits.
I can see the Elvis in him, but wow, he's so much more than that. He's like the best of so many different artists rolled into one. I am quite impressed with his ability to take any song and make it an Adam Lambert 'original'.
Why is America so freaked out about eyeliner and his sexual orientation? What does that have to do with raw talent? I applaud him even more for not trying to play to the all American boy image.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting Marcs!
I don't watch american idol, I know, big shock, I saw this guy though and thought all he has to do is change his name and not look like a sissy, but he sounds pretty good.
He would say that he's a genius. I dug his version of "Ring of Fire" and believe the zitar enhanced it because, if you listen to the song again, it sounds like the longing and pain that accompanies love.
I'm not shocked GT......nothing shocks me from you. LOL
Writer Rider.....I do agree with you. I think he portrayed the agony of being hopelessly in love. That was such a bold move on his part. Johnny Cash is such an American Icon. It was bold and I think it paid off.
I love Johnny Cash music but still loved Adam Lambert's version of Ring Of Fire. I agree-I too think Cash would have liked it. He was after all a musician and music lover.
That's exactly it, Ethel. I really think Johnny Cash would totally respect Adam Lambert and him having his own sense of style. Thanks for stopping by.
Ethel didn't mention it, but she has a great hub about Adam Lambert as well. Check it out when you get a chance!
Great Hub, KCC! I really enjoyed reading it, along with the comments. This young man has caused quite a stir - I can't wait to see where he goes next. Kudos to you for indulging your daughter and tuning in to AI. She'll remember that, and you had the added pleasure of discovering a new talent as well.
Looking forward to reading more of your hubs!
(thanks for the link, btw...)
Thanks, Jennifer! Glad to provide the link to your great hub on Adam! I think we'll be seeing much much more of Adam. The man is extremely talented.
I love both jhonny cash and adam lambert, but i doesnt like the adam lambert's version of "RIng of Fire". I think cash probably liked it coz he himslef love to do covers in his on style, like hurt, rusty cage etc. thumbs up for putting a gr8 hub
Thanks, Maverick!
Ok, so I have a lot to say about Adam Lambert. First of all, Adam didn't come up with that arrangement for Ring of Fire, he heard it on another Reality TV show called "Rockstar INXS" which was performed by a female singer named Dilanna. Go to Youtube and check out HER performance of that song...much better.
Secondly, I don't know how he fooled so many people into liking him. I will say, he has an unbelievable range and you can tell he knows how to hit those high notes...but to me it's all Hollow.
Adam Lambert is someone who PLAYS a lead singer, but actually isn't one. Just listen to his horrible rendition of Slow Ride and you will see there is no soul or feel in that song. He likes to take any song possibly and basterdize it by adding unneeded high notes. I cringed at half of his performances because it sounded to hollow and contrived.
He will not go far in the music industry unless he goes in a direction of pop/dance because Rock n Roll is definately out for him. Even Gene Simmons said he is NOT a rock singer. Slash joked about him being so artificial after it was rock night and Queen's Brian May laughed off the ideas of him joining Queen.
Brian May probably heard his audition of "Bohemiam Rapsody" by Adam and knew Freddie was rolling in his grave.
On top of all that, he came out in Rolling Stone about his sexuality, which no one seemed to care about and now that is all he talks about and has become. He is a becoming a face of gay culture which is fine, but doesn't he want people to know him and recognize him for his music not his sexual orientation?
Adam B: I respect your opinion and thank you for elaborating on WHY you don't like Adam Lambert. Looks like you could write a hub about all the reasons WHY you hate Adam Lambert. I listened to Dilana's version of Ring of Fire, and do we know it was HER that created that version of the song, or did she copy someone else? I'm not here to debate who first sang that song in that manner. I will tell you that I think she really should lay off the cigs so that she doesn't sound like Marge Simpson singing. In my opinion, she sucked at singing, but perhaps she excited a few men who liked her piercings and tongue play.
As far as all the people you quoted who YOU said they don't think Adam Lambert can sing, including YOU....I think you're just jealous and feeling a bit threatened right now. He's got mass appeal and he will do well. :)
Thanks for stopping by Adam B. Honestly.
Johnny Cash probably would have said "Cool...good job kid." He would have said the same thing about this hub. :)
Awwwww....thank you so much Tom! I really appreciate that!
Came back again KCC - you're right - he really is a bit of all the greats rolled into one!
Thanks Shalini! Did you watch the video I just added today? Hubber AdamB thinks her version is better than Adam Lambert's. I added a poll too.
Watched it KCC - she does a good job - but I'm biased - I'm an Adam Lambert fan :)
Thanks for stopping by again Shalini!
WHAT WOULD JOHNNY CASH SAY?WELL SINCE HE IS DEAD, VERY LITTLE-IN FACT KHOUSTELLO SAYS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING SINCE THE DEAD CANNOT COMMUNICATE!
Adam left me without words as I soaked in what I had just heard him sing every night!! Who won American Idol any way !!!!
Kris Allen won American Idol, but you still see more about Adam Lambert in the news. Thanks for stopping by Jamie.
Prior to seeing Adam Lambert on American Idol, I have never ever liked anyone performing another artists' song or music. But Adam had a way a making me forget the original - and that takes talent! I was humming his version of Mad World and Tracks of My Tears for days afterward. I think Johnny Cash would have been impressed and flattered!
That's exactly what the judge want to see, someone who can take a song and give it their own flair. No one does that better than Adam. Thanks for stopping by Nemingha!
What would Cash say?Correct me if im wrong, but isnt he dead?Far too many "what ifs".
Khoustello, I'm well aware that Johnny Cash is deceased, but thanks for stopping by a second time to point that out. I really appreciate your visits to my hub!
adam lambert is superb singer. i just love him.
I agree Maryam! Thanks for stopping by!
Been awhile now, not such a hot topic anymore, but for what it's worth, Adam Lambert was the best performer of the season. After watching every season faithfully, I've finally sworn off Idol though, since America has NEVER chosen the best!
Adam is still a very hot topic. Check out Jennifer Maurer's sizzling hubs about Adam. She really knows how to write about Adam and has a huge following of devote Adam fans. Thanks for stopping by G.L.A.

My wife is a major fan of American Idol and I end up watching a lot of the performances. Like you, I wasn't sure what to think when Adam started with Ring of Fire, but as the song (and season) went on, I became more impressed with his poise, stage presence and sheer guts. I may not be a huge fan of Adam Lambert, But I am impressed and am convinced he will be a performer to be reckoned with. I am waiting to see what he comes up with.
