What You Need To Know About Diabetes-Causes, Symptoms And Types
61The issue of Diabetes is a serious issue. Am here to share with you on Diabetes Mellitus and not diabetes insipidus ( those are the two major types of diabetes).
A brief definition and explanation on Diabetes Mellitus is found below. I hope it will answer some of your question. The other part will contain how to cure diabetes Mellitus.
Definition:
Diabetes Mellitus is a condition in which there is a problem of high level of sugar in the blood.
There are two main types.
Type I Diabetes
The cells producing insulin in the body are not functioning. Insulin is needed for the metabolism (breakdown) of glucose. It accounts for about 10% of all diabetes cases.
Type 2 Diabetes
The body cannot produce sufficient insulin or cannot respond to insulin. It accounts for about 90% of all diabetes cases.
Other Types
Gestational Diabetes: This occurs in some pregnant women.
Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT): Intermediate condition between Normal blood glucose and Diabetes.
Diagnosis of Diabetes
Normal fasting blood glucose is <110 mg/dI
Impaired fasting glucose is >110 and <126 mg/dI
Fasting Blood glucose >126mg/dL and 2 hours after meal blood glucose
>200 mg dl + symptoms is indicative of diabetes.
Symptoms of Diabetes
Passage of frequent large volume of sweet urine (Polyuria)
Increased thirst (Polydipsia)
Weight loss and
Complications e.g. Blurred vision, poor wound healing, irritability. etc.
Causes of Diabetes
There is no specific cause of Diabetes However, the following are risk factors and reasons to undergo screening:
• Overweight or obesity.
• Hypertension.
• Abnormal lipid level. (HDL <35 mg/dl or triglyceride >250 mg/dl).
• Woman with recurrent abortions or still birth or baby weight at birth (greater than or equal to 4 kg).
• First degree relative with diabetes.
• Impaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting Glucose on a previous Test.
• Drug/stress induced raised blood glucose.
Simple Aid On How To Treat Diabetes
• Seek education –Check nearby hospital or clinic
• Diet.
• Exercise.
Medication.
• Blood glucose monitoring.
