What are Wii Points?

Wii Points are a form of Nintendo Points specific to the Wii video game console.  They come in various denominations and serve as the primary way to make purchases via the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo DSi Shop.  When you purchase Nintendo Points, they must be converted to either Wii Points or DSi Points before being spent and once they are converted, they cannot be changed to the other.  The Wii Shop Channel, also known as the Virtual Console, lets you make purchases from a selection of Wii Ware and old school video game systems spanning the ages.

How to buy Wii Points

Wii Points can be bought in two different ways: You can visit a retail location that sells them and purchase them or you can buy them via the Wii Shop Channel with a Visa or Mastercard.  When you stop into a retail location, you want to make sure they sell video games otherwise they may not carry Wii Points cards.  They sell them in specific point values, so if you know what to buy, you can purchase just what you need.  However, if you purchase too few Wii Points, you can always use your credit card to buy more via the Wii Shop Channel.

What do Wii Points do?

Once converted into Wii Points, Nintendo Points allow you to make purchases from the Wii Shop Channel.  This includes available Wii Ware, old school games from your favorite consoles and more.  New games are added to the older consoles as well as Wii Ware titles every week.  You can sign up with Nintendo to receive e-mail updates on what titles are released.  You can then take those Wii Points sitting on your console and you can make purchases to begin playing immediately.  So, if you were wondering what to do with those Wii Points, take a look at what your Virtual Console offers and see if there are any titles you played as a kid you would play now.  Then, make your buy!  You will not regret taking that trip down memory lane.
