Short answer: It DEPENDS on

1. your relationship with the female

If it's your sister versus a friend, your gift might have to be tailored accordingly. [It might be funny to give a thong to your friend to embarrass her, but would you really want to do that for your sister?!]

2. the female's likes/dislikes

Maybe the female hates flowers, because she is allergic to them. Maybe she had a balloon attack her when she is little. Who knows? In this day and age, you can just look at one of the many arsenals available (such as social networking sites), and find out what she likes.

3. the female's personality

Some females will be thankful to get anything (like me), but some females are ingrates and expect a lot more! Know who you are dealing with.

I would say the best gift are thoughtful ones, such as cards that show your appreciation of them. My personal favorite is cash and a card (I know you asked other than cash, but I like the $$$). However, nothing beats a heartfelt present showing how proud you are that she graduated!
