Thyroid foods for hormonal health

When your thyroid is producing the right amount of hormones... the main job is to regulate metabolism.

Too much or too little hormones can result in a host of health issues.

Women are 10 times more likely to develop thyroid diesase.

There are different types of conditions which are called hypothyroidism. This happens when the entire body including digestion slowsdown (underactive) because the gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.

Common signs include goiter, bulging eyes, you may feel cold, tired, hair and skin may become dry, and weight gain...

Hyperthyroidism. This happens when the entire body including digestion speeds-up (overactive) because the gland produces too much thyroid hormone.

Common signs include weight loss, a pounding heart, and skin that is hot and sweaty.

To correct these problems you need to follow a healthy diet, the aim is to regulate the amount of hormones in your blood.

Obviously each condition or different type of thyroid disease rquires a specific nutitional strategy...(and this will also be influenced by the medication taken.)

The thyroid, (a butterfly-shaped gland that wraps around the windpipe, and sits just below the adam's apple)... produces hormones to help control the body's metabolism.

How your body burns and uses energy!

This means the thyroid gland has a direct effect on your weight, energy levels and your ability to absorb nutrients from food.

For underactive thyroid it's important to stay regular and avoid constipation. It makes good sense to include plenty of complex carbohydrates, fiber-rich foods, at least 20 to 35 grams of fiber a day.

Following a natural diet, eating 3 to 5 servings of vegetables (preferably raw) with 2 to 4 servings of fresh fruits, 3 to 4 servings of whole-grain bread, cereal should easily provide adequate amounts of fiber...

For overactive thyroid one of the most significant risks is developing osteoprosis (bone-thinning), this happens because the body is compensating calcium being removed from the bones and consumed by the body...

Following a natural diet, eating 3 to 5 servings of leafy green vegetables (preferably collard greens and spinach)...

2 to 4 servings of fresh fruits, 3 to 4 servings of dairy products, like yogurt, cheese and goats milk should provide adequate amounts of calcium.

Eat foods high in health omega 3 fats and protein, preferably fish, nuts and seeds with 15 to 20 percent more calories (up to 2,000) to maintain energy and healthy weight.

TIP: Good idea to eat your veggies raw.

Include the brassica family of vegetables like spinach, broccoli, cabbage, bruseels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, turnips and soy beans are most beneficial because these vegetables contain (natural iodine blockers)...

An alternative to eating raw vegetables is to drink them, since juices contain large amounts of the healing compounds that have a positive effect on the thyroid.

In conclusion...a good starting point would be drink 4-8 ounces of fresh juice every day...

Thanks so much for answering my request with such rich information! I already love the foods that you mentioned, so this shouldn't be too hard for me. I don't eat a lot, it seems, but I have a real tendency to gain weight if not careful. I will definitely implement the fiber tips. Your symptoms list is right on the money. Keep up the good work! Thumbs up for you!

Tip: By purchasing your own organic whole grains and sprouting them before making your own breads or cereals, you can save yourself from the unwanted effects of phytic acid. You can also buy sprouted breads in many health food stores!

hi Symptomsofthyroid, thanks for your feedback, if you'd like a resource for daily kelp intake, I've found (Blooms Health Products) try Kelp Powder or high potency Kelp Tablets as an excellent source of organic iodine and other minerals (three times a day)...

Hypothyroidism is remarkably common & about 4 to 5 times more women than men will suffer from it, particularly in the over 40 age group.it is important to be able to recognise the signs & symptoms of thyroid disease especially if it runs in your family. Early diagnosis will help speed your recovery as some people can take up to 2 years to feel well again -it took a long time & there are still "off" days even several years down the line.
