Cause & Prevention of Styes

Whenever I don't get enough sleep, I get a stye. I don't do anything to it because it goes away in 2-3 days. However, I make sure I get more sleep.

An external stye is an infection on the eyelid near the lashes. It's caused by bacteria that lives on the eyelid, that we all have.

The best way to prevent a stye is to make sure you remove all eye makeup and wash your eyelids with soap and water using a washcloth. You have to actually rub the area to remove any harmful bacteria. Wash your hands often. Try not to rub your eyes.

Treatment of Styes

Warm, wet compresses can help relieve the pain. Apply 3-6 times a day. This will also help unclog the pore so it can heal faster. You can also use a warm, wet teabag. You can use a normal saline solution instead of warm water or a teabag. Whatever you do, do NOT heat the compress in a microwave oven. It will be too hot. All you need is warm water. Like any infection, it's going to be a few days before it goes away.

If it gets worse, please see your doctor.

I've never heard of anyone going to that extreme. If you get them often, please see your doctor.

A teaspoon of Boric Acid in boiling water is a home remedy that worked for me. Let it cool for a few minutes then use warm compresses with the power boric acid that dissolved in the boiling water. You can pour the solution directly into the eye using a cup. This has been the only cure for any eye infection I had since I was a child. No perscriptions worked for me either. You can purchase Boric Acid at any pharmacy or drug store or they can order it for you. It is inexpensive about $5.00 for 6 OZ. Enjoy!

I can remember my dad was using Boric acid and warm water if he was getting any.
