What are the pros and cons of Diaper Free (EC) babies?
63Sigmund Freud Anal compulsion
Creates More psychiatric problems in the long run
You can save money by going diaper-free, but I promise you that you will end up spending much, much more in psychiatric bills both for you and your baby at a later time. I believe that this emphasis on early toilet training will create a child who is fixated on "the anal", what Sigmund Freud called obsessive compulsive disorder. Children are programmed inherently, neurologically to develop speech, walking, crawling and toilet-training. We, as caretakers, can encourage them in their endeavors. However, if we become wrapped up in when they accomplish those milestones, we really deprive the child of their accomplishment, because it will be our ego that is at stake. I think this is essentially a destructive path for the child and the parent.
As I have said, you might save a few dollars on diapers, but you will create a very fixated, tense home life. And how do you plan to take care of the night time sleeping hours? Children are not neurologically equipped to get up at night to answer "the call of nature." I think you are going to create a very dependent child, who is going to be dependent on the parent for cues in development, rather than responding to his/her own inner neurological triggers.
Now, in 1975, I used a diaper service. They brought the clean cotton diapers to me and I found this to be a very nice option. I was surprised to find out that my daughter didn't know about pullup cloth plastic pants for her toddler. This is a nice option for toddlers and parents.
Remember that the author who wrote about this, Ingrid Bauer, originally observed this behavior in India and Africa, where the mothers carry their babies around with them all day long. Very different from what is culturally observed in the Western world.

That has got to be the silliest thing I've ever heard. We "really deprive the child of their accomplishment" by not making them sit in their own poo/pee all day? If a baby can signal to their parent when they need to eliminate, why not take them to a toilet to do their business? I have first-hand experience since I am doing this myself. My baby signals that she needs to go and I take her to the potty. Simple. During the night, if my baby squirms, I see if she's hungry. If she is not hungry, I take her to the potty and she pees. Most of the time she doesn't even wake up! Baby's are HELPLESS. We have to do EVERYTHING for them. Either change their diaper or take them somewhere to eliminate. No big deal. You will not cause psychiatric problems in your child by taking care of their needs.
I think it is much more distressing for a child to be trained to use their diaper for a toilet, then later told not to use their diaper anymore.
I know Infant potty training isn't for everyone, but don't knock it til you've tried it.

Oy. I respectfully disagree with the whole premise that diaper free babies are going to be nut jobs when they get older, fixated on the anal. Around the world, 2/3 of the global population practice elimination communication in some form from birth; I simply don't believe the majority of our population has OCD issues that Freud predicted. My other point of major disagreement is that most little ones past the newborn stage who wake in the middle of the night are doing so simply to eliminate. We put our son on the potty when he wakes, he simply pees then returns to sleep. I would encourage you to research diaper free babies from the pro side and see what type of hub you return then. It's an odd concept that at first glance sends our westernize minds into a tail spin, but the more I knew about it the more I loved it and know it was a beautiful way to communicate and interact with our small son. All the best...
