What are the pros and cons of putting a picture of yourself in your profile ?
68Throughout business whether it is advertisements, business cards or correspondence statistics show that by adding your picture your message will come across in a more personal manner. In web 2.0 or networking sites in which we have profiles, the old adage "a picture is worth a thousand words," does apply.
The PRO's
Adding a picture of your self or a headshot to your profile in any type of online community or web 2.0 environment will help add a personal touch to you. Those who will read your information will be more likely to be able to relate to you as a person instead of just words on a page. Personal branding is also very important if you are looking to become an expert in your specific field or multiple fields. We can all look at a picture of certain people and know who they are instantly. While the internet is a very large place adding your picture to your profile can brand you as someone with good information.
The CON's
Just as a picture can be powerful it can also be dangerous. You are signing your thought and ideas with a picture of you. It is important to treat anyone and everything online just as you would in person. If you are a younger looking individual adding your picture could be a detriment to your credibility because of perceptions. Knowledge is perceived to be gained by age so therefore depending on what you are speaking of credibility can be an issue.
TIPS
1. When adding a picture make it clear.
2. Add a picture that defines you as you wish to be viewed. If you would like to be know as a professional do not add a mug shot. If you would like to be known as a jokester add a staged picture of your mug shot.
3. Try to keep your picture up to date. What if you get a big break and your picture is from 20 years ago.
4. Smile. Have you ever noticed what people do when a baby smiles at them? They smile back. Business, casual or goofing around a smile will bring warmth to your profile.

Got the picture!
Thanks for the insights Brooke. Most of the data I've read says that people are more inclined to trust you, buy from you, like you, etc., if your picture is part of your bio info. Which means I need to add my picture to my profile!
Good thing you have a picture Brooke...You know i once thought you were a female...
Good post Brooke, In a way a picture is just like real life. If you dress nice and look good people will give you more respect but dress and look like crap and people will treat you like crap.
Sometimes we are our worst enimies.
Hey,
When you look as good as I do, things can get pretty strange. Some of you look familiar to me, especially BarbaraMay.
All kidding aside, your picture makes you act responsible. It makes you triple check what you say and how you act.

These are good points, I always wonder what people perceive from my profile. Or if they even look at it, I definitely agree with the smile topic... People love smiles..
Yeah, that's something to think about, for sure.
Thanks for the tips Brooke. Maybe I need to post a real picture of myself :)
Smiles convey an up attitude, and to this day I still be believe attitude is everything. Well done. Do you prefer an icon or a picture for avatars?
Nice hub Brooke. I didn't put much thought into using a picture of myself for my profile. I will definitely take your advice into consideration when creating future profiles.
Right on! :-)
