What are trackbacks and how do you use them?

Spread the word because a trackback is actually pretty simple...having said that, some free blogging software, (ie; Blogger) don't support trackbacks.

If this is the case, you can easily use a free commenting service like HaloScan to add trackback support to your blog...or hub, etc.

Q: What's a trackback?

A: Trackback is (a widget or device) used to make an online comment...

The first time you try to do a trackback, it maybe a bit confusing but the best part about is you can use trackbacks to promote your articles, websites, hubs, wordpress blogs, squidoo lenses, forum threads...

Firstly, it's very useful so encourage everyone to use trackbacks, because it's a pretty easy process and definitely we all want to start doing asap...

To use a trackback, just write a hub or blog and post, then use a permalink to link to someone else's hub page or blog post, etc...

Simply copy the other entry's trackback URL into your hub or blog trackback field and publish your post...dead set simple, you can't go wrong!

It a very simple way to add a comment about another hub or blog.

So far so good...this process allows you to trackback on your own hub or blog, the 'built-in' feature (device, widget or software) then allows the other hub or blog know you've posted a comment...

Trackback are useful in the eyes of search engines, which counts each one as a backlink, you get a vote from other hubs and blogs...

So the more we all use trackbacks the better the results in terms of SEO.

Another advantage of trackbacks is you're able to continue a discussion from another hub or blog on your own hub or blog, hope that isn't too confusing!

Allow me to explain...

For example: lets say your friend loves to write relevant and informative health and fitness articles in his/her blog or hub.

You read his/her article and it inspires you to comment with a post on your own hub, blog or site about that same interesting heath related issue...

The idea is you want to be part of a network or community so you want to build this by linking to your friends hub or blog in your entry.

And you do that by sending a trackback to his/her hub pages or blog posts.

How to use the trackback feature can vary depending on what application or software you're using, all-in-all, the results are usually the same.

Step 1: Write your new hub or blog and mention the hub or blog entry you're going to send a trackback to ==>

Tip: It's good practice to include a link anyway, so everyone is happy when you do this and you do it via a link called the permalink url.

To get the permalink URL, click on the permalink hyperlink at the bottom of the post you want to link to ==>

Now it's easy to copy the URL from the address field of your browser, simply right click paste into your new hub or blog entry...include that url in a link.

For example...

Here's the default for a WordPress site, the comment might look like this:

"Hey, I'm looking for audio books for easy weight loss <a href="http://www.1-findit.com/audiobookgifts?p=123/easy-weight-loss/" mce_href="http://www.1-findit.com/audiobookgifts?p=123/easy-weight-loss/">Blogging with WordPress</a>"

Step 2: Ok. Get trackback URL from the hub or blog you want to link to...

If you're logged in hubpages, go to your account "URL Trackers".

Look at the bottom of this hub or post, where it says "Share it!" and you'll see a link to page or hyperlink called "Trackback url".

Right-click on that hyperlink and select "Copy Shortcut".

The link url reads like this:

http://www.1-findit.com/audiobookgifts/123/using-trackback/trackback/

On other blog platforms the url may be written out under a heading called "Trackback URL for this post" the url is below.

http://www.1-findit.com/audiobookgifts/trackback/123/

In this case, just select the above url, copy to your notepad or clipboard.

Step 3: Enter one URL per line for each trackback you want to send, then paste trackback url in the field where you're writing your new entry.

The field reads something like "Send trackbacks to"....

In WordPress, login and go to options tab, then select "Permalinks" it looks something like this example:

Step 4: It's time to publish your post because that's it, you're done.

Tip: Check the site you sent the trackback to see if your comment is showing.

Different platforms show different comment sections as a trackback.

Most blogging platforms (ie; WordPress) allow trackbacks, its usually set on the default for trackbacks, but you can allow other posts to send trackbacks to your content too.

BTW, its easier to set your pings to automatically ping or notify other blogs about your trackback.
