What can people do as individuals to help make the world a better place?
68Only One Grain of Sand...
Can start an entire avalanche. I truly believe that.
Being a teacher has changed my perspective on many things, but what has changed the most for me is my understanding of people and how they interact. Instead of being able to choose who I interact with, as a teacher I am forced to be in direct contact with the best and worst society has to offer. I am teaching future doctors, lawyers, grocery workers and inmates. I have watched how both teachers and students can influence each other and its amazing how little things really can make a difference. So take a deep breath, and check out my list of little things that you can do to make the world a little better.
Volunteering - Just One Way You Can Make A Difference
- Multifaith Council Of NW Ohio
Multifaith Council Of NW Ohio is an organization promoting understanding of all faith... - Join The Live United Movement
United Way is a national network of more than 1,300 locally governed organizations that work to create lasting positive changes in communities and people's lives. The United Way engages the community to identify the underlying root causes of the most - American Red Cross: Donate Now
Red Cross is a great place to donate money, blood and hours!
The Short List
1. Be Positive - A friendly word makes all of your friends and family feel better about you and themselves.
2. Say Hello To Strangers- It's amazing how many kids at school I know just from saying hi in the halls. Now they smile and give me hugs sometimes just because I said "good morning" instead of ignoring them.
3. Be Honest - Nothing gets you and everyone around you in trouble faster than being two-faced or false.
4. Volunteer - It doesn't matter WHAT you volunteer for. It could be a soup kitchen, a clothes closet, an art auction, a kid's school dance, you'll meet some new friends and make the world a better place at the same time!
5. Write a Letter- To your congressman (or woman) on an issue you really feel strongly about or to a lonely inmate or elderly relative. Let your opinion count by writing a "dear editor" letter to your local paper. There are plenty of ways to make your voice heard in a positive way just by putting pen to paper.
6. Vote - Not only is it a civic duty, but it's a right that many people have died for. Take advantage of your voice and make sure you show up to the polls on time.
7. Adopt an Unwanted Pet - I'm not saying you should take in every stray cat in the world, but providing a loving, safe home for an unwanted animal is a positive on all sides. You get a wonderful companion and if you spay or neuter your pet, you're preventing more unwanted strays.
8. Tell a Loved One You Care - It's amazing but I find that the people we hurt the most are the people closest to us. Your spouse, parents, siblings, kids, they all need you more than anyone else. Take some time out and love them up. Their lives will be happier and just like in the movies, that love gets spread around in amazing ways.
9. Recycle - Just a good practice in general to give back to mother earth.
10. Buy Local Produce - It supports the local economy and tastes better because it's had to travel less.
11. Contribute to the Arts - Art is a medium that brings people together in new and amazing ways. Children involved in the arts are less likely to drop out of school. Culture is influenced by the fluid, free thinking of creative work. Nothing enriches a community like song, dance and art of every kind.
12. Hold Down a Steady Job - Let's face it, the country runs on the tax revenue generated by committed workers just like you. Not only does it help your country, but it helps provide yourself and your family with a greater sense of purpose and self-worth. Not to mention the financial benefits.
13. Sign up for Organ Donation - You won't be using it anymore, so let someone else have a second chance at life through your gift.
14. Do Your Best - Be the best person you can. Stand up for your beliefs, live your morals and follow your dreams.

This is a lovely hub, and I enjoyed reading it. If we all just look out for those around us and in our immediate community, then the world instantly becomes a better place.
