If you have a sore or a crack at the corner of your mouth, then the cause of it is a skin problem called Angular Cheilitis or Perleche.

This problem is caused by the infection of the labial commissure (the corner of the mouth) by the fungus Candida Albicans or by a bacteria.

Researchers have also proven that people who have a deficiency in vitamin B-2 (Riboflavin), vitamin B-3 (Niacin), vitamin B-6 (Pyridoxine) or vitamin B-12 (Cyanomobalamin) as well as those who have iron deficiency are at a higher risk of having this problem.

There is a variety of factors that trigger the inflammation of the corners of the mouth and the occurrence of angular cheilitis.

For example, the use of ill-fitting dentures by elderly people can cause the over closure of the mouth. because of this, saliva builds up in the corners of the mouth and favors a bacterial or fungal infection.

The long exposure to the sun or to the cold wind can also cause the the corners of the mouth to crack. And then, what makes things even worse is that infected people often lick their lips in an attempt to provide a moment of temporary relief.

Other conditions that cause the corners of the mouth to crack are allergies to toothpastes or cosmetics and seborrheic dermatitis.

Other symptoms of angular cheilitis :

The cracking of the sides of the mouth is not the only symptom of angular cheilitis. In fact, in some cases, angular cheilitis can cause a red rash to spread over the area near the sides of the lips.

In severe cases of angular cheilitis, the splits or cracks in the mouth corners can become very painful and ache severely whenever the mouth is opened.

Some times, after the angular cheilitis attack is healed, those splits may leave scars that require a relatively long time to disappear.

I had cracks in the corner of my mouth for two years, kept going to the doctor and he kept giving me different kinds of creams to put on the cracks but they didn't help, then I went to my dentist for a dental checkup, he took one look at the cracks and said, "looks like you need to start taking a vitamin B compound, take one once a day and the cracks will clear up." I bought a bottle of B compound that very same day and started taking them, within days the cracks started to heal and disappear, that was two years ago, I still take a daily B compound and have had no further problems.

I was so releaved when i found out what this was. I had noticed this recently and I freaked out. At first I thought it was an STD. I was in a panic because I had fool around a bit with a stranger and though I caught herpes. Though it was almost a year later, I researched online that herpes can show up years later after the encounter, and the recipient could not even know it. But after I had it checked out I was so thankful to God that it was only this dry lip bacteria. This was a serious wake up lesson to me and Im never going to mess around sexually again, nor even kiss anyone until I am properly married. I feel like it was a warning and a second chance for me to stop sinning and fornicating.
