Getting Rid of a Live Christmas Tree?
69Find Someone with a Pond
Plop it in a privately owned, stocked lake or pond. The trees provide a refuge for the fish, and apparently break down offering a wealth of benefits to the ecosystem.
Two things to keep in mind when disposing of your live tree this way:
1. Make sure the owner has given permission for you to do this. I don't have the resources to bail anyone out of jail for doing so while trespassing.
2. Make sure the tree has not been treated with any type of chemical. This would include the dreaded spray-on snow!
Live trees are great to have if you don't have allergies or asthma in your home, and they can be beneficial after the ornaments come down. The fish would appreciate it if you would remove all the foil tinsel, too!!!!!!

I didn't know this until a friend came by and asked me if she could have it. I was curious as to why when she told me. I thought it was very interesting.
My son now has asthma, so we now have an artificial, but the memories of going every year to the farm and choosing, then cutting down the perfect tree, followed by a hayride and hot chocolate are priceless!
My daughter, too, loves to fish. Great memories of father and daughter fishing together, aren't they? My husband LOVES to take her. She got one of those rocket rods for Christmas this year and is very anxious to try it out!
Thanks for the post!
I miss the smell of a real tree at Christmas. Since I got married and had kids we have gotten a fake tree. It even has light on it. It seems so much easier and no needles to pick up or watering to deal with. If I had the time I would prefer a real tree and this seems a great way of disposing of it. It always seems like a waste with them all on the sidewalk waiting for the trash truck. At least using them for firewood or adding to pond would be a lot better.
The smell is one of the best parts of a real tree, isn't it?!?! Thanks for the post.
You HAVE to have a real tree! Plastic just isn't remotely the same thing.
We plant our back in the garden in the New Year (-:
Oh, LondongGirl, how I long for a real tree. Pine-Scented Febreeze just doesn't do the real thing justice.
We tell ourselves that having a tree with the lights already attached all but makes up for the real thing. It makes us feel better.
Thanks for stopping by and for the comment!
Next year, get a real one. It's worth it!
I wish that I could, but my son's asthma is triggered by the sap or the smell, or something having to do with it. We'd much rather enjoy the holiday with him at home than at the hospital, where we wouldn't even get to see the tree anyway.
They are wonderful, aren't they?
You must have quite a bit of property to be able to plant one every year.
Happy to hear from you again!
Sorry your son's health is affected by them.
When I say "we", I mean my parents' place. My small family (2 of us, plus toddler son) go there for Christmas every year. In fact, I just wrote a hub about it!
There isn't a new Christmas tree every year, there are 3, and we rotate which one we use.
That is AWESOME LondonGirl! How special to have not one, but THREE trees! Your toddler is very blessed!
I'm going to go read your hub as soon as I get my son out of the bath. I'm looking forward to it!
It's not just the fish that benefit. If you know where the tree is, you know where to drop your lure! Bass seem to love these things, and so do the bass anglers!
See, BT!! Something else I didn't know!!!
Thanks for stopping by on your way to muse Pam with funny movie and song titles. I told you I was following you!! :-))
PM, bet ya dint know you can see the Christmas tree in OT the book Jeremiah. Check out what he says about it. Chapter 10
Like scarecrows in a cucumber garden! They can't harm you, but they can't do you any good, either.
That's a struggle for us. We did a unit on false gods last semester, and this came up. My little ones decided we shouldn't have a tree anymore. We had the discussion that we don't put a tree up to idolize or worship it, but it's still an open discussion.....
Thanks, CC. The girls will be excited that you brought it up!
Well, I ran into this scriputre many many years ago and said, "Now self, that's a Crhistmas tree he's talking about." It is more about idols, but the tree is one now days. Kids are precious and they will enjoy it too i hope.
Isn't that the truth?
I found this to be very informative. Thank you. :) There's a lot of things I did not know! :P

I have a handicapped daughter that loves fishing. We go on my cousin's pond most of the time when we get to go, so if I had put up a live tree I would have took it to his pond--with his permission of course. This year my wife had surgery recently, so we didn't even put a tree of any kind up.
I enjoyed your hub, and it is very true that fish do enjoy the habitat of the fresh trees until they decay.
