What do you say about writing HUBS? Is this skill an ART?
77Quiz: are you a skilled writing artist?
To be able to answer a question like: "Is the skill of HUB writing an art"; one has to consider a few things first. Before I give you my take on the question. Take this Quiz just for fun. Keep track of your yes and no answers.
- Did you always have the urge to write?
- Do you hope (deep down where no one can see) that you will be the next Nora Roberts/Dean Koonts ?
- Are you motivated to write hubs just for fun?
- Is it to just get a few bucks on the side?
- Do you think you have something you might like to share?
- Are you having fun writing hubs?
- Do you pre-plan or pre-design your hubs every step of the way?
- Do you forget time when hubbing?
- Do you stop every-day-life to jot down a hub idea or an additional aspect to the hub on the "drafting board"?
- Can you picture your hub before it's written?
- Do you sit back and reconsider your Hub before pressing the "submit now" button? (even after you've tweaked and re-tweaked it)?
- Does seeing a white page or screen motivate you to create a Hub?
- Do you feel that some of the other writers at hub-pages are your extended friends circle?
- Do you have the technique for unique word applications?
- After it's been published, do you go back and tweak your hub on a regular basis?
- Does the aspect of making money become your only drive to write hubs?
- Do you sit down at the computer and say 'Inspiration be damned:Full speed ahead'?
- Do you prepare a list in point form?
- Do you talk about your hubs before-hand?
- Are you willing to spend hours researching?
- Do you love writing on hub-pages?
- Do you check your hub score frequently?
- Is it important to make money off your Hub?
- Do you compare your hub with another writers article on the same subject?
- Have you realized that these questions will get us no-where?
You've just spent three minutes taking a test that will only tell you that you are a dedicated skilled Hubber. If you're writing hubs on a regular basis, out of the twenty-five questions above five, no more then ten will have a 'no' answer. Even with those 'no' answers most hubs written are meant to be of value to someone, in explanations, in how to's, in spreading new information, or just in plain fun.
(BUT... you say some are here only to self-promote or to just become a nuisance to the more serious writers. Mostly by ignoring the "come see my hub at www. ????.com and buy my e-book on how to ???? " They will also fizzle away just as fast, as their type of hubs really have nothing relating to skill or art of any type)
We are here to determine if the skill of writing Hubs is an art form. I say yes; absolutely one hundred and ten percent.
Do you consider painting an art? 'Yes' you say, painting is the most obvious of all art forms. Has been since the beginning of time. 'Why' you ask? It was a way to communicate, a way to record happenings. A way to show Uugggg in the cave next door that you were responsible for killing the biggest, scariest saber-toothed tiger. Making the neighborhood safe for all the little cavelings again.
DaVinci, and all the other big masters are still the biggest of talkers around. Those poor fellows have been nothing but dust for many a day, yet their mouths are still flapping. Communicating, talking to all of us through their beautiful timeless art.
When you paint with oil you have your paint brush (in our case also known as electric typewriter, word-processor, alright, alright I'll get with the times, keyboard). On your canvas (computer screen) you lay down your background. You then layer color upon color (word side-by-side word) to depict or describe the scene. You blend all the colors (harmonize, and fuse your story line). For the painting to become the masterpiece it has to have a flow that combines all the components. The story , article or hub needs that flow also to be able to describe or portrait the exact meaning of the writer.
In our "new age" communication technology blogging, hubbing, staggering (oops I meant to say) stumbling or what ever else you want to call these articles. They have become the showing and telling. Our cave paintings to let our next door neighbor half way across the globe know such things like the sabretoothed computer virus has been slaughtered and its safe for all to be out frolicking in the cyber-space neighborhood again. If that is not art, in a different massive wondrous form, I don't know what else would be.

Writing is an art and commenting on hubpages can be as well, I enjoy developing my hubs and it is time that is always well invested.
I agree Bob! I can honestly say I have a lot of fun putting my hubs together. Even with all this extra techno-stuff that I'm learning as I go along.
Thanks for taking a look and for the comment

Excellent hub. I couldn't agree more. I feel reassured.
LOVE it! Funny and true... and I've only been here a few short weeks. Steph
Thanks Peter! For coming by and the comment.

Steph! thanks for taking a look and your comment.
Welcome to Hubpages.
regards Zsuzsy
great hub, well written and I agree. :)
I love your hub. I scored pretty good and I've only been hubbing for 10 days. I find your hub to be very informative. Good writing and I like that you compared it to art. As for the cave paintings, well they were the first form of writing, even if they were only drawings. It all had to start somehow.
Iðunn ! Thanks for coming for a visit.

Chatterbox! Welcome to the HUBs. Thanks for taking a look and your comment.

Great brainstorm. I appreciate you sharing this, and look forward to more hubs from you. By the way..... I scored okay... so I still have a lot to learn. Keep me posted, huh??

What kind of mad man?
Having created many paintings and over a hundred portraits to the expressed wishes of the recipients I can tell you from personal experience that it borders on an illness called Obsessive Compulsive Behavior Disorder.
All genius is of the same ilk, do you think that Albert Einstein had much time for anything beyond mathematical equations and physics?
Do you think it is possible to conceive and understand such massive concepts without complete focus and concentration over great spans of time?
Do you think that Das Kapital by Karl Marx was written in a few weeks or the Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith was just a quick mind bomb written on a scrap of paper?
These are the works of obsessive nature and all genus borders on insanity allegedly, ask Vincent Van Gogh, ho sorry he’s dead.
Aristotle in his infinite wisdom concluded that all art is the unrelenting struggle for perfection, a perfection that can never be obtained and so it is the struggle not the conclusion that is the true measure.
And so finally the written word is poor substitute for pure thought.
Out here there are no stars.
Thanks, Gareth.
Deep Man! Thanks for your comment.

How fun Zsuzsy Bee -
I must say, that still -- I have not come upon a site that I would rather put my heart and soul with, nearly as much as this one. Most here are honest in their desire to write from their hearts. This is so apparent by the quality of work that is generated here on HubPages.
I am proud to tell my family and friends what I am doing here at the Hub, and this is because, I know when they visit; that they will be very impressed; not necessarily with what I am doing, but because of those I write among.
I love the fact, that your test revealed all of us... and now I don't feel like I am doing things that the rest of you are not. lol
Tweak-peek-jot-add-subtract-change-visualize-list-organize; and yes, I will admid it -- obsess!
I need to say, that I believe I work harder, because of what the rest of you are doing. I am learning, and am inspired by so many here. It causes me to want to raise my 'sites' in doing better that I would otherwise.
I know that it is an art to write well, and it is a wonderful form of both creativity and communication. Through both of these mediums, what we are able to do here, is to teach.
To teach - IMHO, IS the greatest of skills to acquire, and of the arts - it is the finest - of ALL fine arts!

Hi Zsuzsy!
Nice and gutsy of you to recognize this as an art form! Very complimentary indeed! Thank you.
C-Lee! Thanks for coming for a visit.

Hi Zsuzsy, nice hub!
I'm addicted allready.. I'm hubbing while painting there's just so many great writers I gotta multitask and do both :D
I didn't realize how much hooked I've become till I went away over the Christmas holidays...I missed hubbing...When I came home it was the first thing on my mind...
regards Zsuzsy
Nicely done, Zsuzsy Bee. I hope you have many more empty canvases.
Thanks for visiting William and for the comment. The empty canvasses are not a problem to fill them all could become a big undertaking.
regards Zsuzsy
Nice hub! Money is definitely not an issue for me or you'd see more. Or you wouldn't since I haven't made any. Who cares. I skip around in my expressions, writing, painting, drawing, and making sculptures. Only why write if you can't put it out there for someone? So here it goes and here it stays.
Phanthom Blot! Thank you for your comment and visit.
regards Zsuzsy
Wonderful insight, but I suspect it may be more than art. I've been here less than 2 weeks and I fear it's already becoming an addiction. Although I have been reading so many great hubs, I have had little time to actually write.
rmr! I guess you're truly one of us then. Thanks for your comment.
regards Zsuzsy
This is a classic Zsuzsy. I've commented before, but I couldn't help it. You should be proud of it.
Thanks Peter for visiting and your kind comment. zs
Wow! What a beautiful Hub! I love the analogies and yes, you are right, this is art! One of my teachers once said that ones art will always "surface" somewhere- and this is definitely where my "art" is surfacing right now.
Dorsi! Glad you came for a visit. Did you do the test?
Isn't hubbing just so much fun? regards Zsuzsy
