Homeless

Living as a homeless

Becoming a homeless person is much easier than you may think. Since the cost of life rise faster than wages it's almost impossible to save money and if you lose your job, as i did, you end up in the street.

The life of a homeless is very easy and very difficult in the same time. Easy because you have less needs; the basic are a place to sleep and to find food. Difficult because even going to the lavatory becomes a problem. There are very few places where you can get help and most of the time you just have to get by on your own. It's difficult to stay clean because you can't take a shower everyday, you can't change clothes, you can't shave and so on. You are not a normal citizen anymore, your very existence is a shame for the state and for the "normal people". So most of them just stop seeing you, you become invisible. So you have to learn the difficult art of surviving at the edge, you are not living in the same city, you go to places you have never been before and learn things you have never done before. I think the worst part is the way people look at you, they don't show pity but anger. A few days ago a very well-dressed lady asked me how i could live in this way, as if it was my choice. I think i am getting meaner and tougher. It's almost impossible to leave the street on your own, because nobody gives you a job, besides i'm 56, for me it's even worst, that's why i'm trying internet, if it doesn't work i'll die in the street, like a stray dog. Two days ago a guy died in the middle of the street, it took almost an hour for somebody to call an ambulance, as i said before you become invisible.

Thank you for answering my hub request. I've had an opportunity recently to get a glimpse into the lives of some local homeless and every word you say is true. Very sad, but true.

The thing you have to remember, is that you may be homeless, but you're not hopeless. You've found a way to get to the internet (most likely at a shelter or library) and that's an excellent choice you've made. I think it can help you vent a lot of what you're feeling.

I've heard it said that everyone is just one mistake, or one phone call, or one misfortune away from being homeless themselves. You're right that it doesn't take much these days.

Take care of yourself out there. I know it's tough.
