A look back at Childhood
72A trip down memory lane... Take a left at Nostalgia Place and enter the 1990s...
So I am channel surfing the other day and come to rest on one of the cartoon networks. Not that I was looking to watch cartoons, or anything, because I am a big girl now and big girls don't watch cartoons anymore. I just preview them from time to time to decide which ones I find satisfactory for when my children are old enough to watch. Yeah... that's it. But this isn't about me and whether or not I sit on my couch eating Cheerios while watching the Cartoon Network on Saturday mornings. Anyway, like I was saying, the clicker jambs up while I was channel surfing the other day and gets stuck on a cartoon channel. Then I hear the words "If I have to listen to that song one more time, I'm throwing myself in front of a bus!". I look skeptically at my little one, but soon remember he won't even utter "Mama" yet, although "Dada" seems to be easy enough for him to say. So the culprit of such a dark comment was the cartoon character! A child's program in this day and age is spewing out comments that suggest suicide. Maybe I am being too sensitive. Then my mind travels back to the good ol' days. Days when it was worth getting up on Saturday mornings. I can't, for the life of me, see how those quality shows could have been replaced with the crap that's on today.
So here are some of the best cartoons from the 80's and 90's.
The Gummi Bears
This was one of my favorites. I don't really remember what the heck it was about, but I do remember "Gummi Berry Juice" and wondering how I could get my hands on some so I could bounce all over the place. After years and years of searching I have found its equivalent for humans - Red Bull!
Fraggle Rock
Fraggle Rock
Okay, so the little builder people used to freak me out for whatever reason, but I loved this show. Oddly, the most prominent memory I have of this show is the sheep dog.
The CareBears
Care Bear Stare
The Care Bears were awesome! I won't lie - I still have some Care Bear memorabilia packed up somewhere. The Sleepy Bear was my favorite.
David the Gnome
David the Gnome
Not very popular, but my personal favorite of all favorites was David the Gnome. He lived in a tree with his family in the middle of a forest and got around by riding on the back of a fox and I think he could talk to animals, too. This one made me wish I was a gnome or a fairy or something.
The Side Streets off Memory Lane
I know there were many more, but these are the few I remembered first.
Okay, so thinking about the good cartoons of my childhood inevitably brought to mind other fun memories.
MMC
The Mickey Mouse Club
Many great musicians (if you can call them that) and actors of today got their start on "MMC" (in the 90's). Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, J.C. Chasez, Kerri Russell, Ryan Gosling, and the list continues.
Spunky Punky
Punky Brewster
Although this show originally aired from, I think 1984 through 1987, I remember watching the repeats as a kid in the early 90's. And, yes, I dressed up as Punky one year for Halloween. Complete with pigtails, handkerchiefs tied around my knees, two different shoes and I even had my dog acting in as "Brandon".
And in case you're wondering what Punky looks like now, here you go:
I know! I said the same thing!
Saved By The Bell
One word: SLATER!
SLAP
Slap Bracelets
And of course I thought of the unbelievable Slap Bracelet craze and then the sudden banning of them in schools. Come to think of it - they really could do a lot of damage.
Shirt Clips
Shirt Clips and L.A. Gear
You were one cool chick if you had a shirt clip. Yes; I admit to owning a few. I also admit to wearing my hair in one ponytail on the side of my head and multiple socks scrunch down around my ankles of stirrup pants. And, of course, I can't forget my L.A. Gear jean jacket with all of the rhinestones and fluffy pink letters on the back. Yeah, that's right; I committed multiple fashion faux pas at the same time.
The Side Ponytail
Of course there are too many things to include them all in one hub. I haven't even touched on Who's the Boss, Doogie Howser, New Kids on the Block, Vanilla Ice, friendship bracelets and the Babysitter's Club book series. I'd be here all day!
Cris A's hub 'Keepers of the flame: The Hottest Babes of the 80s' inspired me to do this.

Wow! That was fast HorrorPunk. Thanks for reading. I never thought to look for them on DVD - I'll do that, though. Thanks!
OMG...I know Mario Lopez family...I used to have a huge crush on him since he was the only chicano on tv at that time besides reruns of Chips and I didn't like Panchorella!! ha ha ha
Anyways- I liked gummi bears too and fraggle rock and punky brewster, also JEM ( did you ever see that show?) I grew up in the 80's and turned a teenager in the early 90's...so this was a memorable era to me! GREAT HUB!!!
My cartoon era was the sixties, and I have to say that "Throw me under the bus" pales beside some of the things that Jerry used to do to Tom or the things that used to happen to Daffy Duck or the Coyote as he tried to get that Road Runner. My faves were the original Johnny Quest and of course Tom and Jerry. But I really liked Fraggle Rock when my kids were watching it!
That's funny, LA! No, I never got into JEM - I don't know why. Thanks for reading!
Hi Tom! Those are some of the best cartoons you mentioned - the Loony Tunes, right? I still like Wile E Coyote and Froghorn Leghorn. It was a different time then, though. A time when people didn't blame the tv for influencing their or their children's actions. Thanks!
Azur - Big Fraggle Rock fan. The Doozers! Absolutely loved it! Maybe I should hub Fraggle Rock :)
Rated up 'cos this was great and reminded me of things I'd forgotten about :)
Thank you, Frog! Yeah, Fraggle Rock, um... rocked!
I'm afraid I was a little before your time (just a little), but I am (or was) a cartoon nut. I know fraggle rock (anything muppets was cool by me) and oddly enough, slap bracelets. Cartoon wise, nothing ever could compare to the old Warner Bros., but my era would have included The Jetsons and the Flintstones. More recently I thought Animaniacs was genius and would make it a point to watch it whenever possible. It was nice to learn of your culture, earthling!
Thank you Christoph! I had forgotten about the Animaniacs. And of course I watched all the Warner Bros. classics, but in keeping with the time frame I had to omit them. Wile E Coyote is still my favorite, though.
Thank you for reading and leaving a comment!

Hehe...great hub. I love all of those cartoons and own them all for my boy to watch (except the gnome one - which I'll check out). He loves them.
