What is Intuition?

I've been busy lately with my wife writing our book and haven't had much time for writing here. So I thought why not add some of the thoughts from our upcoming book. We have just completed the outline on a chapter dealing with intuition. This is a much ignored faculty of the mind and yet so important. It is something which philosophers have written about throughout the ages and yet it is generally not understood or even regarded as a serious element of human life.

Intuition is largely ignored and spoken of as something mysterious. Sometimes you will hear someone speak of their intuition as a feeling in their gut, or that hunch or inkling of an idea. "I just know it's so", "I can't explain it, it's a feeling I have inside." These are some of the ways people speak of their intuitive faculty. Even though they may feel something, they usually can't explain it. How many times have you experienced this inner feeling that something is wrong or right? Is this something we should be taking more notice of?

These definitions from Rhymezone are quite good at explaining Intuition in simple terms:

  • noun: instinctive knowing (without the use of rational processes)
  • noun: an impression that something might be the case

Intuition is that intellectual faculty which takes the place of reason. Reason uses the memory and conscious analytical thinking to assess a situation to make a decision. We reason things until we think we understand it, weighing the pros and cons and making finally a doubtful decision. We either decide not to go ahead with the idea hoping we are not missing something good, or we decide for it hoping we are not making a mistake. On the other hand intuition is more of an inner feeling or knowing that something is either bad or good. So what is intuition? Is it more than just a feeling? Can we rely on it?

I believe that intuition is a lost ability to receive messages from God. This is our built in ability to communicate with the universe. Inventors will also tell you that their ideas come from their intuition, or from some unknown source. This source is the spiritual connection we have with God and every being in Heaven and Earth. It is like a spiritual, infinite Google, an unending source of wisdom and knowledge. All we need to do is to tap into it and receive the information it delivers.

Modern man is unfortunately taught to rely totally on his reason and logical thinking abilities. Intuition isn't taught. However, if this is indeed our connection to this infinite source of wisdom then wouldn't we be wise to do all we can in order to consciously become aware of it and use it? In order to do so we must learn to trust the instinctive feelings we receive. When reasoning fails to deliver a clear answer, or even before wasting too much time with reason, breathe deep and feel within and discover what your inner being is telling you. The only way to really know this inner voice and to recognize it whenever it is active is to step out on faith and trust it. Only by practice will your intuitive voice become familiar and you will become comfortable to heed its instructions. What experience have you had with your intuition? Would you like to share it here?
