Thermostat
A thermostat is basically a device for regulating the temperature of a system. This temperature regulation can either be to increase or to decrease temperature. A thermostat is able to regulate or control the temperature by controlling the flow of heat energy into or out of the system. In simple words we can say that the thermostat switches heating or cooling appliances to ON or OFF mode in order to maintain the correct set temperature. In other words, we can also say that a thermostat is essentially a heat-activated switch with a temperature sensor that controls the ON and OFF switch. When switched ON, it completes an electrical circuit and when switched OFF, it interrupts the electrical circuit running into the heating or cooling system thus controlling the temperature. Thermostats are widely used in the electronics industry mainly in manufacturing heating and cooling home and industrial appliance.
A thermostat may be a control unit for a heating or cooling appliance such as a heater or an air conditioner. Thermostats are constructed by using temperature measuring sensors. These sensors are able to sense the temperature and it passes on this information to the other parts of the thermostat which then does rest of the temperature regulation. These sensors may include a bi-metallic mechanical or electrical sensor, Expanding wax pellets, Electronic Thermistors and semiconductor devices or Electrical thermocouples (Wire assembly used with a control device to sense temperature.)The thermostat was invented by a Dutch man, Cornelis Drebbel, in the early 17th century by a Dutch man. He di an experiment by placing a float inside a mercury thermometer and connected that apparatus to a damper cover on a furnace. When the mercury climbed to a certain level, the float caused the damper to close. Modern day thermostats do the same job i.e. they connect room temperature to the output of a heating or cooling system.A thermostat should be able to eliminate broad swings in room temperature in order to do its job properly. In hot season, room temperature drops to a low point before the heat goes on and reaches a high just after the heat goes off. Researchers claim that the key to comfort is to maintain room temperatures within a 2 degree Fahrenheit swing. This is a comfort window where people don't notice a variation in temperature and feel comfortable.|

How To Install a Programmable Thermostat
Thermostat Buying Guide
Choice of a thermostat generally depends on features and price unless you have a system that requires a particular type of thermostat. Techno-Phobic people prefer a conventional electromechanical model of thermostat. People interested in more control and potential energy savings may go for an electronic thermostat.
Electronic thermostats normally cost more than electromechanical types. For example, a Honeywell T-87 Round thermostats may cost about $35 to $40. A high-end electronic model can cost up to $200.Most of the electronic thermostats look alike but they may have different features and perform different functions. Cheaper thermostats will obviously have lesser functions and features than the expensive ones. Feature and function the reason of price difference of thermostats. Low-priced thermostats are generally not able to maintain a narrow "comfort window. Also note that different models of thermostats may have different programming. Some are easy to program while other are quite difficult to program. Most of the thermostat manufacturers around the world are focusing on more and more features. Now focus is mainly on user-friendly electronic thermostats that are easy to operate and program. Manufacturers like Carrier and Bryant have developed a range of thermostats based on input from consumer focus groups. Their resulting products are aesthetically pleasing and have large "positive action" push buttons made from soft rubber, and display useful feedback and system alerts such as a "clean filter" indicator etc. These thermostat units automatically change over from heating to cooling to maintain the right temperature. In case there is power outage, they hold their programming up to 60 to72 hours without any backup batteries. Before buying a thermostat, you should always look into the above mentioned features to get the best deal and your money's worth.PrintShare it! — Rate it: up down flag this hub
