What is tinnitus?

It is defined as the perception of sound in the ears or head where no outside source is present, and it usually comes as a ringing in the ears. It is a symptom of an underlying medical condition, and it is not a disease or infection of sorts.

Are there any sounds associated with it?

Yes, there are other sounds associated with it, although the most common is a ringing noise. These sounds include hissing, buzzing, chirping, clicking, whistling, roaring, fluttering, gurgling, and cracking noises. The kind of sound that a sufferer hears often has something to do with the cause of his or her tinitus.

What are its known causes?

Generally, its known causes are medical conditions ranging from ear disorders to circulatory problems. These include noise-induced cochlear damage, stress, sinusitis, allergies, Meniere's Disease, age-associated hearing loss, earwax impaction, muscle tension, whiplash injury, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), thyroid disorder, vitamin B12 deficiency, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and malformation of the capillaries. Of these conditions, noise-induced cochlear damage is the most common cause.

Is there a cure for it?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for it as of yet. But, there are remedies that help its sufferers manage its symptoms. The approach used is often natural, just like the use of homeopathic tinnitus remedies, herbal preparations, acupressure, acupuncture, and meditation. Its sufferers are also advised to stay away from salty foods as well caffeinated foods and drinks in the likes of chocolates, coffee, and sodas. Their diet, on the other hand, should be especially rich in zinc, protein, choline, and the vitamins A, B, and E.

Why is it associated with the immune system?

If you have ear ringing, what may happen is that you are not able to get enough sleep at night because it tends to get louder in quiet environments. As you might have already known, lack of sleep tends to weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections and diseases. Many sufferers who find it hard to sleep at night listen to white noise maskers.

How important is it to educate ourselves on what is tinnitus?

Very important. It is one way of preventing yourself from getting affected by it. Or, if you already have ringing in the ears, it is one way of not letting it take control of your life. As you know, one of the best ways of fighting against an enemy is to make yourself familiar with it.
