"Tweet" About Your Home Business!

This weekend I attended a webinar on Twitter given my Mike Klingler of Renegade University. Twitter is probably the easiest marketing bullet to shoot in the arsenal of Web 2.0 tools. (If that term is "Greek" to you, please look at my blog post on "Web 2.0".) Twitter remedies 2 of the biggest mistakes those with home businesses make: 1) focusing only on those they know personally, and 2) over-promoting their product.

Listen, I know - I've made the same mistakes. When I first joined an MLM I learned all the "old-school" marketing formulas. It resulted in limited sales, a low rate of return customers, frustration and (this was the kicker)...my "friends and family" web avoiding me. (Don't you wince just reading that?!)

How Does Twitter Work - and Fix Those Mistakes?

Twitter allows you to peek into the business successes of others and get your own face "out there" easily. Just by signing into your account ~ and starting one takes about 2 minutes! ~ you can quickly scroll down to see what those you are following are up to. From there, you can make comments, get more information from someone, add contacts and offer your own valuable content to the mix. One word of caution: don't over-sell your own product or service. Here's why. Think of the guy at your high-school reunion who pushed his business card at everyone and cornered you at the punch table to hear his pitch. Did it work? How did you feel about him? Did you "join his team"? Bottom line - you don't want to become his internet equivalent.

Additional Value to Home Schoolers

One thing you need to know about me - I'm passionate about home schooling! So...while listening to the webinar, of course the wheels were spinning...how could this benefit the homeschooling community? After you find and add your homeschooling friends and colleagues, it's a snap to ask all of them at once for a quick question on a history curriculum, share a wonderful website or money-saving tip you just found, spread the word about a field-trip opportunity in the works or post details about a relevant meeting coming up. The opportunities are endless!

So Can You Think of a Reason NOT To Try It?

Let's see, it's free, takes about 2 minutes (maybe) to set up, easy to use, and...if it doesn't work for you ~ what have you lost? Give it a shot ~ and look me up while you're there!!

Thanks for your tips, Pat. I'm just getting used to Twitter but it does get some conversations going. I know it's a great business tool as well as a personal outlet.
