VOIP which was a distant dream to many has found its application in many mainstream agendas. Previously firms used to depend upon the PSTN for their local and long distance telephony needs. But thanks to high speed internet services, VOIP was released much earlier than anticipated. The service is being used for commercial and non commercial purposes in homes as well in MNCs respectively. So what exactly is VOIP? How does it function? The details will be listed in the coming sections.

The principle is simple. Analog voices are digitized and transmitted through the internet super highway in the form of small packets. The packets are encrypted for extra layer of protection. Encrypted packets have to be decrypted at the destination and suitable machinery is also available for the same. VOIP systems are far replacing the conventional telephone systems in many developed nations as well as the developing nations.

Businesses make extensive use of the technology because they can communicate with their business counterparts in various other countries for free or by paying a fraction of the cost given for the same service to their regular telephone service provider. Most of these are software tools and the controls are easy to be handled and do not require much user input or special training to be imparted.

VOIP also facilitates easy voicemail and fax services. One email inbox can be programmed to receive all the voicemails and faxes. Some advanced features such as call monitoring, call barring, call forwarding, conferencing by three ways are also the hallmark of the product. The benefits are mainly cost wise. The system can run on the existing hardware without much alteration. The system is also known to be scalable, it means one can add or subtract the additional lines being employed for the system. This cannot be done for conventional phone networks.
