What is WiiWare?
WiiWare allows gamers to download applications, games and channels designed specifically for the Nintendo Wii console and its users. WiiWare is available via the Wii Shop Channel. While some WiiWare content is free, most of it is purchased via Wii Points converted from Nintendo Point purchases or via credit card on the Wii console itself. When you download WiiWare content, you can either download it to the console or to an external SD card. As long as that SD card is plugged into the system, you can play the WiiWare content.
How does WiiWare work
WiiWare is exclusive content developed for the Nintendo Wii. These tiles range from Wii Channels such as the Internet, the Mii Channel or the Photo Channel to games developed by small-time gamer makers looking to get their name out there. In order to get a title available for WiiWare release, you purchase a development kit and license from Nintendo. Once approved, the title is leased and released by Nintendo for the Wii console for users to purchase at reduced cost. This is a win-win for gamers and developers alike who get instant feedback from Nintendo and real-time gamers who purchase, download and play titles instead of spending full price on a new game on the market.
Where to get WiiWare
WiiWare can be purchased and downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel for use on the Virtual Console. Games, channels and more can be purchased as WiiWare. In some cases, Wii Points are necessary to purchase WiiWare just like other games played on the Virtual Console on your Wii. You can browse what is available before making a purchase and read more about each title. You cannot preview WiiWare titles, so choose wisely before making a purchasing. WiiWare can be viewed online, too. You can read reviews and what other gamers thought of titles before making the buy. WiiWare is a great way to play games on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console and check out what else is out there instead of shelling out the big bucks for a game at a retailer.
