Definition of Bluetooth

Formal Definition:

Bluetooth is the name of an open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs). It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS232 data cables. It can connect several devices, overcoming problems of synchronization.

Simple Definition:

Bluetooth is the name of a technology that lets different devices with a Bluetooth chip communicate by radio instead of cables. These devices can be computer, monitor, PDA, cell phones, mouse or any other device with Bluetooth installed in it.

How Bluetooth Works

The Bluetooth devices use radio chips. When a device having Bluetooth chip installed in it is placed within the range of another device with bluetooth, then it automatically detects the other device with bluetooth and connects itself to it.

Why was it named Bluetooth

The name Bluetooth comes from 10th Century Danish Viking King, King Blatand (or Bluetooth in English).

He was the King who united the fighting tribes of Norway and Denmark and as the Bluetooth technology was created to 'unite' together lots of different devices they chose the name of the king who united the tribes.
