What is a UPS?

Chances are the only UPS you know is the United Parcel Service.  The brown box trucks that deliver mail and parcels around the United States and world.  However, in the technology world,UPS stands for uninterruptible power supply.  This is a type of backup battery that allows for an additional power source to your computer or other devices should power go out.  It also acts as a surge protector, and in some cases, an automatic backup system.

Why do you need a UPS?

A UPS servers several purposes for any computer user. It allows you to have a backup battery in case you are working on something important when your power goes out or you are attacked by a surge of electricity. Since you already should be using a surge protector, this is a step up from that protection. Some UPS set-ups allow you to immediately begin backing up data you want as soon as the device realizes a surge is in progress or power has gone out.

Other UPS units simply give you a pre-set time to turn off your computer or even turn it off for you after saving data quickly. Depending on your computer needs, a simple UPS system might be the best. In other cases, you may need a more advanced UPS backup system to keep your files, folders and other data safe from harm during a surge protection, brownout or blackout.

How to find the right UPS

Finding the right UPS starts with understanding what you need it to do for you. Since there are different levels of UPS devices, researching exactly how each one works and what it will do in relation to your computer is key to finding the right one. Without taking the time to see what you can get out of a UPS, you are wasting your time simply walking into a store and buying one off the shelf. Chances are you will come home with nothing more than a glorified surge protector instead of a solid UPS system to protect your computer.
