What is holding back the 'Hindi' language from getting popularized as a writing language
76The spread of Hindi, the language spoken by majority in India, to non-Hindi speaking regions in India during the last decade can not be credited to Govt. of India efforts but to globalization and liberalization to some extent if not fully. With globalization, came the media fever, and enormous increase in television channels. Popularity of Hindi serials like 'Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu Thee' compelled non-Hindi speaking people to take interest in Hindi plays on the TV and understand the things spoken in Hindi. Last time, I visited few city of Tamilnadu in 1996 and found that people can understand a bit the Hindi language but don't like to talk using national language. It was not so that they could not speak Hindi. They could speak broken Hindi , not a perfect one, but they didn't like to do so. Reasons for the reluctance were purely political. Our political leaders take shelter under casteism, regionalism, religions and customs and never spare even national interests. Hindi was made scape goat by few politicians and for this reason it could never become a preferred language in non-Hindi speaking areas.

What could not be achieved by Hindi movies, despite the resources, was achieved effortlessly by the small screen (TV). Now you move to any region in India, you will not face difficulty in communicating with people in Hindi language. However, people still can not understand languages other than dialects in interior remote rural areas where development has not spread its wing. I think enough is said about the spread of Hindi as a medium of oral communication. Let's come to the point.
What is holding back it from becoming a popular writing language despite celebration of "Hindi weeks" every year in all government offices and spending lot of money for organizing events in Hindi. Again some hitch is there. Organization of Hindi Week in offices has become a ritual or completion of formalities. People understand the intention of political parties whenever they make a propaganda using patriotic or nationalistic rhetoric based on languages, religion or region etc.
Let's stop here and try to understand the real issue.
Main reason for not used by majority as a writing medium is use of complicated and difficult technical words. There is need to develop Hindi language with simple technical term. Just for an example. word used for train in Hindi is 'Lohpathgamini" that is difficult to remember. There are thosands of such words that are never used in common place. Real well wishers of Hindi or Patrons should make a committee at national and state level to incorporate and endorse simple Hindi words in place of complicated ones to make the language simple to use by common men.
If you search the net for Hindi blogs you'll find few sites doing business in Hindi and these sites generally use transliteration technique for translation from English to Hindi. There are no common fonts like English fonts. If you visit different sites of Hindi, you will need to download different fonts for each site. However, C-DAC is understood to have developed common fonts to solve this problem.
In my opinion, there is need to develop a Hindi Keyboard similar to used for English keyboard. It should have keys similar to english keyboard because most of the net users have developed a habbit to key in English words using English Key board. This should not be confused with using roman Hindi.

thanks jayb23. Sometimes I get surprised that there are several organizations/Academies for promoting Hindi as a national language in India but we don't have a good site in Hindi. There is not a single good blog site for bloggers interested in writing Hindi blogs.
fyi India doesn't have any national languages..Hindi and English are the official languages of the central government. There is a difference between "Official" and "National"
"India’s constitution recognizes 18 different Indian languages, but Hindi and English are considered to be the official national languages. No one common language is spoken on the Indian subcontinent. Hindi and English are the coofficial national languages of India, and both tongues are used as lingua francas in the various linguistic regions. In addition, the Indian constitution recognizes 18 state languages, which are used in schools and in official transactions. These are Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada (Kanarese), Kashm?ri, Konkani, Malayalam, Meithei (Manipuri), Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. In Pakistan, the official language is Urdu; the official language of Bangladesh is Bengali.". I am quoting this sentence from Teach India Project Website.
Every year "Rajbhasha Week" is celebrated in all Central Govt. Offices. Can you tell me the meaning of Rajbhasha. Don't confuse "Raj" with State. "Raj" refers here to Govt. or Nation.
B/W I'm not interested to waste my energies to decide whether Hindi is an Official or National language, it is our mother tongue and a common language for all Indian. If we feel proud to be Indian we must also feel proud to speak in Hindi. Anyways, this is not a political platform. My concerns are here for the development of Hindi language.
Hi Prem,
I'm a tamilian. Here in Tamilnadu, it's true as you have mentioned hindi is not that popular or good. There was an agitation against hindi several years ago here which can be a possible reason for hindi being in such pathetic state in Tamilnadu.
When I was in Pune, I was amazed to see how people love marathi/hindi in such a way they would write sign boards, number plates and almost everything had their own language to express it. That is one quality, in my opinion tamil people are lacking. We need to love and care for our language more.
I think something has to be done for the development of Hindi language.
I fail to understand the politics behind the languages. It is an additional quality if one knows several languages. I know our forefathers were educated using Urdu as an medium of learning despite their belongingness to other religions. One has to get proficiency in a language other than mother tongue in several institutes. You are true that Tamils are reluctant to learn Hindi. I have several Tamilian friends who didn't learn even few words of Hindi. You would be surprised to know that one of my Iraqi friend got expert in Hindi as a spoken language within three months after getting admitted in B.Tech course. When she came to India, she didn't know a single Hindi word but if you talk with her now you can't tell that she is not an Indian. She speaks Hindi so perfectly. When an Iraqi can learn Hindi within few months why not an Indian? One Malyali lady speaks good Hindi now, few years back she had great hesitation. There are thousands of such examples of families of central govt. employees in India
A Hindi keyboard is a good idea.
Premsingh,
You seem to be quite naive in assuming that Hindi speakers from the North are soft-spoken, well-meaning nationalists who desire nothing but "national integration" and "country's integrity!". Huh....?
Why turn a blind eye to the reality that's all around us. The average North Indian's knowledge of a Tamilian is limited to the image that his Bollywood crap that is fed to him. The image of a black, uncouth "Madraasi" who bathes in Sambar, and cries "AYYO, AMMA" at the drop of a hat! Look back at all the films that ridicule Tamil and Dravidian culture that you guys churn out!!!! Tamil is considered one of the world's oldest langauges. I am a "Mallooo," who took pains to learn Tamil! It's immesnely rich, and original. Unlike Hindi. If there is to be a National language in India, let it be SANSKRIT. Bot your BOOTIPHUL LANGUAZZE that's a mixed up brew of parsi, arabic and some obsure semitic language!!!
Hope you get the message.
Hindi is not National language of India.
Prem,as we learnt hindi,i insist u to learn marathi.do u agree?
Dear Mandhar,
I've great interest in learning other Indian languages. However, you will agree that one can learn a language other than mother tongue either by staying in that region or having few close friends who can help in learning a language. I brought few marathi movies DVD and I watch them at my home. I love all local languages and dialects as I love Hindi. I'll request you to place few common Marathi sentences in the comment box along with English translation or even I'll request you to mail me at least 20 Marathi sentences with translation in Hindi and English and I'll publish it as a hub to provide an opportunity to non-Marathi speaking Indians to learn at least twenty Marathi sentences.

brilliant Hub Premsingh. Hindi as a language is losing out big time and if you go to diff states in India , you will see the localites speaking the language of the state. I dont think may Indians take pride in speaking Hindi which ofcourse aint a good thing. Keep up the good work.
