I believe that it was a more common knowledge that the feline population was more susceptible to Diabetes (just as humans are) but it has been proven that many dogs can also attract this disease as well.  Sometimes medications and insulin are necessary, plus incorporating a special diet.  Diabetes can be controlled at times with just a special diet; it all depends on the severity.

There are special foods out there for the diabetic dog to keep diabetes in control.  Diet in fact can sometimes be a matter of life and death.  Over processed foods with no nutritional value, high sodium and simple carbohydrates, along with little activity leads to this disease.    Give your dog regular exercise along with a natural and balanced diet for great success.  Of course, it is necessary to read labels and be knowledgeable as those foods out there label as “diabetic foods” are just commercialized to spend money on products that may not be good at all.  At one time a high carbohydrate diet was recommended but that since has changed.

They say that natural is best.  Looking for foods with natural ingredients of meat, vegetables and eggs, along with omega 3 fatty acids can be a best choice.  Again, you will need to read packaging and labels.  Suggestions from your Vet is always a best choice as you can make yourself crazy looking at the 4 – 6 aisles of foods available out there.

Try to avoid the dry foods which are high carbohydrate foods.  Pay attention to sodium and carbohydrate levels in your canned foods as well.  Foods with high fiber are a great choice which works both on obesity which in turns works on Diabetes.  Most obese pets will contract the disease.  As with humans, there are good and bad carbohydrates and we want to provide the best carbohydrates with high fiber content.   Diabetic dogs that eat a diet high in fiber experience less fluctuation in blood sugar levels and should now become standard as many diabetic dogs have been helped with a high fiber diet.

Fiber is always suggested to humans for cleansing the digestive track . . . and it works in the same way for canines and is crucial to their health.  It not only helps with obesity and diabetes but also is vital for controlling constipation, colon cancer and more.  Emission of insulin is stopped by the pancreas which can lead to increased blood sugar levels. Fibrous dog foods can help to control and maintain the level of blood glucose.

The best foods to provide your diabetic dog are a fibrous canned food that that is high in fiber.  Other sources of fiber (as you read those labels) are citrus and beet pulp, wheat, oat bran, tomato and apple, rice, soy and soybean hulls.  Of course, a good source of protein is essential as well, unless your dog has urinary or kidney problems as which time low protein in recommended.  Sometimes it gets so complicated and speaking with your Vet and specialist at some of the better larger pet supply stores can help.

As important as it is what to feed your dog, it is also important that they get the proper amounts or it could lead to other problems such as gas and loose stools.  Feeding that proper amount of a good natural balanced diet will keep your dogs feeling healthy and playful, as they should be.
