sleeping positions for back comfort

The human spine, with all its bumps and curvatures, is not meant to lie prone in a completely straight position. Today's back health is subject to significant research in helping with good back posture even when asleep.

  • If your back is not causing you any pain or you have not injured your back, try lying in bed with a small soft towel or blanket rolled up and tucked into the curvature of your middle back, this helps to take the strain off the spinal discs.
  • If you like to lie on your back, slightly bend your knees instead of being completely flat, you should feel an easing of a slightly tugging sensation down your spine. this is also taking the pressure off your discs.
  • If your back is injured or giving you pain, or you just find it difficult to keep your knees bent, put a doubled pillow under your bent knees, this is very comfortable and gives your spine a more natural prone position for sleep or rest.
  • Try lying on your side (left or right personal preference or alternate between the two) with your knees bent adjusting to your own comfort
