Introduction to Hamster Bedding

Are you risking your hamster's long term health by using the wrong, or even potentially harmful, bedding materials?

Choosing the right type of bedding for your hamsters may at first seem like a fairly straightforward matter. However, safety concerns have arisen in recent years over potential harmful effects of certain types of hamsters bedding and the subject has become a matter of much debate.

For many years, people have used woodshavings and sawdust as bedding for their hamsters and, judging by their ready availability in pet shops and stores, continue to do so. Two of the main wood types that are used in the manufacture of bedding material for hamsters are cedar wood and pine wood.

Woodshavings have been such a popular choice for many reasons. Their natural insecticidal properties help to reduce bacterial growth and the incidence of fleas, mites and parasites. They are relatively cheap to buy and are generally absorbant and good at reducing urine odour.

More recently, however, the practice of using this type of bedding has come into question, with many hamster owners and researchers questioning the safety of woodshavings and sawdust. The problems that have been identified are linked to the insecticidal chemicals within the woods, known as phenols. These chemicals have been linked, by some authors, to an increased risk of respiratory problems, cancers and liver damage.

The evidence that supports this theory has, in itself been the subject of much heated debate with some commentators strongly in favour, advocating a blanket ban on the use of both cedar and pine woodshavings as a bedding material for hamsters. Others, highlight stronger evidence that suggest cedar wood as the main culprit, whist there are many who feel that the arguements are weak and lack any firm evidence to indicate that we need to change current practice at all!

Where there is doubt, however, there will naturally be concern. For peace of mind, many hamster owners are looking for alternatives to woodshavings...and there are many other materials available. But what is best for your hamster?

Bedding Alternatives

There is a wide variety of different types of pet bedding available in the market place. However, there isn't one single type that is perfect for hamsters - all have their advantages and disadvantages. Some hamster owners will swear by a certain product that others would not even consider appropriate for their needs. A lot is down to personal preference. Unfortunately, our furry friends aren't in a position to tell us what they like best!

Megazorb - a dried wood fibre pulp which has it's origins in the equine world and is widely acclaimed as an excellent bedding material, not just for horses. It is dried, sterilised and dust extracted twice. With great absorbancy, hamster urine odours are kept to a minimum and, because of its biodegradability, it composts really quickly. Mezasorb has a pleasant texture that is soft to the touch and has very little odour of its own.

One of the main criticism of Megazorb, is its availability and packaging size. It isn't usually stocked in general pet stores, although is readily availble online and from larger farm and equine shops (UK based). At around £5.00 for an amazing 85 litres, it is certainly great value for money. Consideration is obviously needed for storage.

A similar equine product, Aubiose, is made from organically cultivated hemp and is popular amongst some hamster lovers.

Carefresh is another wood pulp bedding material that is highly recommended for small animals. Very similar in characteristics to megazorb, although not as readily available in the UK. Because it is more difficult to access and buy in larger quantites, it does work out more expensive.

Aspen woodshavings - for the die-hard woodshavings fans out there! Aspen woodshavings are a safer alternative to cedar and pine as they do not emit the harmful phenols that have been associated with health problems in small animals. Accessibility is a big problem and related mainly to whether the country you live in grows Aspen trees. So if you live in Canada, you're OK. UK residents - forget it! Can also work out a bit pricy too.

Finacard - is finely shredded, dust extracted cardboard bedding. A great material for allergy sufferers though again, not easily available in pet shops. It is highly absorbant and good for burrowing.

Paper based bedding materials

Paper-based cat litter- some hamster owners are using paper-based cat litters as a safe bedding alternative. It is said to be comparable to carefresh in its consistancy. Easily accessible in many supermarkets and very economical, this type of material is good in terms of absorbancy and for burrowing.

Caution needs to be exercised in its purchase to make sure that you are buying the right product. Some paper-based cat litters are not 100% recycled paper but merely have been produced from a paper source. You need to check that any product you buy is safe for small animals (some say so on their labels), i.e. that it is only paper.

A similar type of product is Yesterday's News, specially processed recycled paper in pellet form. It is claimed to be very absorbant, perfume free, with very low dust emissions. Some hamster owners may thinks that it's a little too firm underfoot for comfort.

Shredded paper - whilst very soft, comfortable and burrowable, fails to pass the test when it comes to absorbancy and can become very soggy. Probably a type of bedding that is best used in the sleeping quarters only.

It is widely thought that using shredded newspaper or any other paper that has ink on it, can be harmful to hamsters.

Which product do I choose?

Bearing in mind the many different products available, it can seem very difficult to decide which type of bedding material would best suit your hamster. A recent survey amongst hamster lovers showed that opinion is widely split on this issue, with about 50% of those contributing still advocating the use of woodshavings!!

You can only do what you feel is right for you and your pet. We decided to err on the side of caution and have changed all our hamster's bedding (syrians and dwarfs) from woodshavings and now use megazorb.

Read the research and draw your own conclusions. There are plenty of bedding material choices out there to suit everyone and every budget.

Godo advice. Definitely avoid pine and cedar bedding for any small animal pet. I also don't like the kay-tee total comfort. It's really dusty, and hamsters among other small animal pets have sensitive respiratory systems, and the dust can really affect them. It does settle, but many hamsters like to burrow and dig through their bedding, and that will just stir up the bedding. Plus, it pats down and just looks dirty.

The type of bedding material is probably less important in relation to smells than the type/number of hamsters and the frequency of changing the bedding and carefresh is one of the best beddings.

If you have a female Syrian they smell very strong during certain parts of their menstrual cycle, or if you have a number of dwarf hamsters together or they sleep in or use the tubing as a toilet then the smells can be worse.

But basically if smells are a problem then changing the bedding more frequently is the likeliest answer.

if your hamsters abdomin is twice the size it might be a girl. You should check if it is a girl or a boy.If it is a girl, then i might be pregnant. It could've gotten pregnant in the pet shop before you bought it. I am no expert but i would see if the stomach gets bigger. If it does then i would try to take it to a vet, or you could go online to a website about hamsters and other small animals.

I don't know what to do, I'm taking care of my friends hamster and the cage started to smell but i didnt have anything to use as bedding for the hamster because I'd run out =S so I'd heard you could use newspaper, so then i did.

But every night he would chew on the newspaper and now he seems to be sick, he had a lump on his neak, it lookes like a blister, big red and sore.

I'm not sure weather it was the newspaper that caused the problem?? what do I do!!!???

Thanks for this article, It was very informative and summarized everything nicely! I went the pet shop with my mum today and she humiliated me because I didn't want to buy the wood shavings, (Because they never state what they are made of or if they are kiln dried) lots of other people were buying it for £3.99 for a huge bag and they seemed to be laughing at me at the till when my mum started telling me how ridiculous I was buying a tiny bag of Aspen for the same price, and some paper based cat litter to put underneath it as the bag was so small it will only fill half of my cage set up.

in total I spent £9.50 and It will only last a few days so I am considering just getting the pine shavings, they are using that now because when I bought the hamsters they came with a big bag of shavings, but they are itching and occasionally sneezing, but my mum says so what! it won't kill them! and I said yes it will eventually, but her and the pet shop owner laughed at me, saying the usual, how all their hamsters are fine with it, and they wouldn't sell it in stores if it was unsafe! I felt a right idiot, and am now upset that I spent all my money on something that won't last! if I had bought the other one it would have lasted 3 times as long! I have seen some carefresh on e bay that I may buy, it's £20 but a 60L bag, the bag of aspen I got today was 6L, so that seems a good price to me, but you can an 85L bag of something equivalent to megazorb for £16 so not sure which to get? what if it's not as good as megazord? is megazord big hard ugly pellets? please help someone if you know! I'm also worried about the smell, I am about to change the bedding to aspen for the first time, (I've had them 4 days now with the pine and still no smell) but worried that the aspen looks like sharp shards, hope it doesn't jab them in their eyes or hurt their cheek pouches if they eat it! and worried that if I switch to carefresh it will stink? or should I get a huge bag of wood shavings, (you can get a massive bag here for £6.50, it will fill a large outdoor dustbin) and just keep using it mixed with the cat litter? please help, I don't have anyone to talk to about this as no one cares! My mum said they're just hamsters for christ's sake! they'll die in a year or 2 anyway so what does it matter! I am personally horrified by these remarks, yes it is true, but I have brought them into my home, I am not about to treat them badly because they have a shirt life span! that's just evil! please help folks! thanks! (I'm in the UK and every pet shop i've rang about carefresh says they haven't heard about it, let alone stock it!)

last year my hamsters had babies i had fluff as their bed because my hamsters live out side in a shed although it is not to cold in the shed i think it might be best if i put fluff in to keep them warm any way it had its babies and one of the babies legs got caught around the fluff and its leg came off.So do you think it would be best if this year i put shredded tissue in.

OK so I'm thinking about getting a hamster, but I'm not sure if I can handle the responsibility. How often should you change the bedding? How often do you feed them? Is getting one OK, or should I get two in order to keep them from getting lonely? This is all very confusing. And how long will they live? I'd be greatful for someone's help.

Animal Lover  says:

HI if your thinking about getting a hamster only get one. even if they are litter mates they will fight and sometimes kill one another. You need a big enough cage/aquarium for them to be happy. A 10 gallon aquarium is awesome to use. You should make sure that they have about 2 inches of bedding in their tank because they love to tunnel and burrow and sleep under the shavings. You should change the bedding once a week. And give it fresh water daily. and keep a eye on its food everyday. They need a wheel to run around in and they need chew toys as their teeth are constanly growing. They bedding you get for your small animal is up to you. but fir them to build a nice comfortable bed they need a soft material. So you can either buy a cotton soft material for bedding or give them cotton balls. either will work. They also like yogart drop treats which is pretty cheap and they need some timothy hay or orchard grass because it stimulates natural foraging. They are sweet little animals and if you handle them alot whenever they are between 4-8 weeks old they generally become really friendly. I hope you enjoy one if you get one. Good luck
