Getting Started In Angel Investing

I am under the impression that you want to know how to start as an angel investor, investing in business startups and expansions.

One of the most important things to do is begin angel investing in a business that you know something about. Many investors take a significant part in the managerial activities of the business. Along with their money usually comes strict guidelines as to how the money will be spent and the rate of expansion. As an angel, you will be guiding the business, so you will need a lot of knowledge in their field, or have an available consultant who is extremely experienced in the industry.

Business incubators are usually the medium that bring together growing businesses and investor money. If you have one locally that you know about then great, just make an appointment with the coordinator and start shopping for a business. If you don't know of one right off hand, that's okay, try the following resources:

NBIA.org: The National Business Incubation Association offers resources for business incubators and entrepreneurs.

SCORE: "Counselors to America's Small Business" Score is an excellent resource for both small business owners and investors. If you want to be an Angel Investor, you need to be a member of SCORE.

There are several other resources that you can turn to, including the entrepreneurship department of your nearest state college and your local Chamber of Commerce for more information.

Remember, know your business first, and your company second.
