What is the problem with Placebo Medicine?
56New cover story in US News & World Report
I was amazed to see Homeopathy on the cover of US News and World Report. Even if in the article homeopathy was cited as the poster child of "woo-woo" medicine. Then there was Barrie Cassileth, chief of the integrative medicine service was quoted that homeopathy is absurd.
I am always amazed by people who have so much criticism about something they don't understand. It is like when people thought the world was flat they could not believe otherwise. The human body is so complex and we take for granted that our car key can unlock the car from more than ten feet away, but cannot understand how homeopathic remedies can affect the human being. What is absurd? People who still can only understand Neutonian science when even the general public is relating to quantum physics.
It really seems like the dark ages when health editors and doctors talk about medicine. I for one would much rather heal from a placebo then surgery or pharmaceutical medications with all their recalls and side effects.
I do wonder what is it about placebo medicine that disturbs people so much. Would you really rather have to take medicine daily for chronic disease or have a spontaneous healing that really works?
The problem is the success rate...Until enough people try homeopathy and can testify the results it will continue to be mostly off the radar of the general public. We need people who have used homeopathy to speak out and share their experiences!
It is absurd for people to dismiss something they don't understand because it does not fit material science...and even material science has discovered resonance and the plausibility of homeopathy. Check out the eminent scientist Rustum Roy to find out how absurd it is to dismiss homeopathy because there are no molecules of the substance in the remedy.

Hi Melissa,
There are several reasons why people are so blissfully unaware of the benfits of "alternative" treatments. Not only homeopathy but many other really effective treatments too.
Medicine and drugs are BIG business, Drug companies have billions of dollars tied up in R&D and their marketing etc.
The name of the game is MONOPOLY,
As an NLP instructor I know the difference that can be made in peoples lives without surgical or drug based intervention. If you can change the beliefs and decisions that people have, that limit their ability to heal themselves, you are a long way down the road towards excellent health.
This is a great post, Thank you Melissa.

It is true that there is a financial reason that keeps homeopathy off the Radar...And yes healing can happen at so many different levels.
I just hosted a TeleConference with Lynne McTaggart, author of "The Field," and she is working scientifically with intention and how this can heal the planet and individuals...Her site for participating in the intention experiment is http://www.intentionexperiment.com
She is also reporting on alternative medicine at http://www.wddty.com
I agree with you wholeheartedly, Melissa. We see this with pets, too - They are sicker than ever before, and much is traced to vaccinosis and overmedication with side effects - with the same dynamics as with human medicine, the same pharmaceutical companies, and the almighty dollar. You would love the holistic approach of established veterinarian, Andrew Jones, shared in articles on http://www.squidoo.com/dog-health-care/ - because sometimes people can more readily begin to grasp the picture looking at the dynamics with their dogs and cats than at themselves.
As for chiropractic, if your problem is an alignment issue, what makes a medical doctor think it can be treated with drugs and slashing? I don't think I would be walking today if it were not for my chiropractor and God! I recognize the incredible advances in Western medicine, and understand that nothing is better in many situations of urgent care and some paliative care. But reason and balance is needed, as you suggest... openness to scientific inquiry and using the best of each approach for each unique circumstance. And that includes wellness. I love my Mona Vie!

Amen to that, I've heard so many doctors speak down about chiropractors when they themselves are splicing up patients and inserting back rods which recent studies say only works to the benefit of the individual a third of the time! The other two thirds they could actually be doing massive irreversible damage. Etc, etc. It's a shame. I want doctors and scientists to be like they were one or two centuries ago... with open minds ready to accept the wonder of anything that works or might work, open not only to their own little fields but to the awe of exploration and discovery. The same can go to cryptozoology. "Such an animal doesn't exist! There's no proof!" Well duh, if you're walking around with your eyes closed you're not going to find proof, even if it is sitting there right in front of you. Skepticism has it's part in this world but I think it's taken a choke-hold on all the wrong people as of late. Good article, keep it up.
