What not to write about on HubPages

By Uninvited Writer

So you have signed up for HubPages and you are ready to create your first hub. Did you make sure you read and understood what is not allowed? They are pretty self explanatory but I'll describe them in detail. If you follow these rules you will be getting high scores in no time and earning money at the same time.

The illustration below is what you see after you input the title of your hub and hit continue.

No Spam

Under No Spam you read "no promotional offers or Hubs designed only to promote another site or business." This means that you are expected to write an article that can stand on it's own. You can review sites but if your whole hub is telling us about a site we have to visit to get something free or inexpensively, that is spam.

No Adult

This says "no nudity, no sexually explicit content, and no links to adult or pornographic sites." This is pretty self explanatory. People try to get away with posting such hubs but they will always be flagged and will be removed.

No Gambling

"Do not promote gambling or online gambling sites." This means you do not write about your favorite bingo or poker site and tell people where to sign up. You are allowed to post the rules of games such as poker, bingo, as long as you don't link to gambling sites.

No Unfinished Hubs

"Please do not publish unfinished, strictly personal, or "test" hubs." This means you don't post a hub that consists only of "this is cool" or "this will be a place to talk about..." You are expected to post an entire, finished article. If you are working on a hub and will not finish it then, save it as unpublished. This will prevent it from being deleted by HubPages administration.

No Deception

The rules say "Your title and tags must match your Hub's content. Link text must not be deceptive." This means that if your hub is about one subject, you don't throw in random tags that you think will get you more traffic. For example, if you are writing a hub on dating, you do not use tags such as "naked" or "nude". Also, don't title a link one thing when it links to something completely different.

English Only

"The text of your hubs should be predominantly in English." Since HubPages is situated in the United States, your hubs should be in English. The staff do not speak every language under the sun, and will not know what the content of the hub is. It will be removed.

No Copied Content

This is a biggie. "Do not copy content you do not have the right to use. Original content is rewarded with higher HubScores." This means that everything you write on HubPages should come from you. Just because an article is on the web does not mean it is free for the taking. If you do publish someone else's work you run the risk of being prosecuted under the law.

This also means that any images you use in your hubs must either be your own, royalty free or ones that you have gotten permission to use.

Also, taking articles from article directories without changing them at all will result in lower HubScores. Even if you have written the article and posted it elsewhere, your HubScores will suffer.

Enjoy

I wrote this article after seeing the number of people who seem to just let this page pass by without even giving it a look.

The rules are not that difficult to follow and they ensure that HubPages is known as a site that contains quality articles and information that people will want to visit again and again. If all you do is post spam and copied articles your HubScores will remain low and you will not make very much money here.

Many of the rules have come into being because of AdSense rules. AdSense will not accept certain content and that content will cost HubPages...and you...money.

Enjoy writing for HubPage. It can be a wonderfully rewarding pastime that might even reward you financially.

If there is anything here you would like to add or if I have gotten some of the facts wrong, please comment.

Now you've done it:  I must now go and write a hub to violate each of these rules.  OOO-HA-HA!

Actually, I think "Naked Hubbers" got pretty close already...  (Shhh, don't tell)

Oh wait! And my "Story Tellers of Epic Rock" series violates the Copied Content rule.

Quick! Find me a church-goer to corrupt!!!

Great idea for newbies - might help them steer clear of some of the common errors

But, I have a feeling the worst offenders don't bother to read other hubs :)

Thank you for this hub. Can't wait to get past the computer jargon so I can have some fun (writing something I understand). I'm finding I have a lot to do before I can just start writing anymore. Your suggestions are much appreciated.
