You have IRS issues if you receive a notice from the IRS for an audit, whether a correspondence or face-to-face audit.

Correspondence Audit

The correspondence audit is conducted through the mail. The IRS computers review every tax return and determine if corrections are necessary. If so, a notice is issued to the taxpayer. Don't dismiss this IRS notice. If you owe more taxes, take action immediately. Delays may add penalties and interest to the bill. If you don't agree with the information on the notice, write a letter with information or documents necessary to support your case, and send it with your reply. Keep copies of the correspondence.

The Face-to-Face Audit

If you receive a notice asking you to call for an appointment or specifying a time and date to face a revenue agent or tax auditor, you have a face-to-face audit about to happen.

What to do?

  • Don't dismiss the notice. The IRS will take action if you do not respond in 30 days. Your next mailing may be a bill.
  • The specifics and the documents you have to bring with you will be in the notice, so read it well and follow directions.
  • Organize your records. It is your task to prove that your tax return is accurate. If you come to the audit organized and ready for the auditors questions, it will make the job easier for the auditor. This is a plus.
  • Replace missing documents. If you find that the needed records are missing, request duplicates right away. All supporting documents must be on hand in the audit.
  • Information that was not requested should not be taken to the audit. If it's brought up, inform the auditor that it isn't on hand.
  • Leave bad attitude at home. Be polite and courteous even if the auditor isn't. This can work in your favor.
  • Only bring copies with you. Do not present original documents to the auditor. If you must bring originals, ask the auditor to make copies and return the originals to you.
  • Divulging unnecessary information may lead the auditor to audit you further.
  • Understand the actual audit process and understand your rights. If you believe the IRS is wrong, learn how not to agree. You have the right to an appeal, though it is better to settle during the audit.
